View Full Version : PCOS Thread
So I was thinking since there are so many of us that have PCOS, some of us who might have PCOS and some of us who have no idea....that there should be a thread for us gals. :truce:
Here is the just of my story...some of you have read my rants.:pokey:
STC for over a year now, suspected PCOS b/c no pg being off BCPs over 3 yrs, STC, family history of PCOS and other fertilit issues, 3 GYN's said no way I have it b/c I am thin and not hairy. Hello have they ever heard of people who have aytpical PCOS...not everyone is textbook! Anyway, so after being on 2 mos of Clomid and still no pg I decided that enough was enough and we went to see a wonderful RE who immediatly Dx me with aypical PCOS. I finished my 3rd and last round of Clomid in April and waited for AF to arrive so I could call my RE and make an appt to get me stared on Femara and glucaphage. He will be doing several f/u U/S thru-out my cycle and I have my HSG scheduled for Friday. DH S/A is a-ok:happysperm:.I started my new meds yesterday and am optimistic about our chances of becoming pg :bellyrubs:more than ever! The RE said he is very optimistic about our chances as well (friends of ours referred us to him after having a sucessful IVF with twins 4 yrs ago...they said he would not say that if he did not mean it! plus two people I work with see him too, one just had her 1st in December and the other he and his wife have had 2 kids and they are working on their 3rd!). Hurray for super RE:hero:!!
Anyway, so that is kind of a long story short! :silly:
I am also an RN and working on my masters in nursing and am seriously thinking about writing my graduate thesis about PCOS and heart Dz. PCOS causes cancer and heart disease. I really think that there is a huge correlation b/t the 2, seeing how PCOS is underdiagnosed and how heart dz is the #1 killer in women. .... ...ok I'll get off the :soapbox:now! I sure hope that made sense..I am suffering from a nasty cold from H*&$ and it I tend to ramble and not make any sense!
Good luck everyone with :bfp:and :babydust::babydust1::babydust::babydust1:

I Guess I'll Go Next......
Dh And I Have Been Together Since 1997. Ttc Since 1998. One M/c In 1999.
Diagnosis Of Pcos In 2006. No Bfp's Since.
DH HAS HAD A S/A. THE RE WAS VERY IMPRESSED. EVERYTHING WAS ABOVE AVERAGE...
I Have Insulin Resistance And High Testosterone. I've Done 3 Months Of Clomid.
Tried Metformin But Bad Allergic Reaction To It.
Last Month Was My First Month On Follistim. My Ovaries Did Nothing....
I Finished Provera Yesterday... Just Waiting On Af To Start Higher Dose Of Follistim And Ovidrel For This Cycle...
That Was 10 Years Of Very Long Ttc Story Made Very Short.
Good Luck To All My Pcos Sisters...
Everytime I Look Up Pcos, I Seem To Come Across High Blood Pressure, Heart Disease And Diabetes. I Also Beleive There Is A Connection. Also Weight Gain, Which I Have Experienced.

I too have a long history of fertility issues in my family as well as cervical/uterine cancer. To make my long story a short one, I have PCOS and had a laparoscopy/hysteroscopy to remove 6 polyps and a D&C (not for a miscarriage). I have been on Metformin for insulin resistance, Glucophage, Prometrium and Enjuvia for AF. I had not had AF since Sep. '07 (that would be about 8 months or so), just recently had AF this Monday (5/5/08) after taking Enjuvia and Prometrium.
I should also mention that I am Insulin Resistant and am really prone to being a type 2 diabetic, DH's S/A is above average (17 million is average, he had 40 million). My Grandma and Aunt Rita are both diabetic (Aunt Rita has one ovary removed), Aunt Corina has Endometriosis, Aunt Gloria and Aunt Delia both have had hysterectomy's. This all comes from my mother's side of the family.
If God does decide to bless me this time around (my cycle) with a baby then I will let you all know. I will be going to see my RE this week if not the next. So good luck to us all and happy BD! ***Baby Dust***

Here is my story:
I went on depo for two years after getting off and going to BCP I found out I had little cyst all over. I took my last pack in May and conceived my daughter in december 2001 by my first husband.
After my daughter I tried one more shot of depo, then BCP, then the patch and finally just had a iud put in.
In October 2006 I had the IUD pulled after being in pain from what I think was a popped cyst(but never got that confrimed) and then went on BCP. Stopped those do to loseing insuranece benifits and wanting to have my boday ready so we could get preg easier. Then after awhile we went back on BCP.
I stopped BCP last december for me and my new husband to start trying for a baby. Here has been my periods sense Jan till now...........
Jan 10- Feb 23 45 days
Feb 23- March 23 30days
Mar 23 - April 24 32 days
So as you can see I am very irregular
DH was also told her has pretty much no sperm but that is debatable right now becuase he had a kidney stone recently so he was given flomax which a side affect is a slow sperm count so we are waiting to see if that is true or not. The dr also told him he caries the gene or fibrocystic so.
That is my story...
My doctor said if we can not be fixed there is artifical ,invtro, donor or adoption.
So that is my story
I have had primary hypertension since I was 20. I will be 28 in July.

I Just Want To Say....
I Have Always Had Irregular Periods Since The Age Of 11. Never Had High Blood Pressure Or Weight Gain. Until 2005. I Was Right At The Weight I Should Be, Then My Dh Was Sent To Iraq, I Lost Weight.(from Worry I Think.)
When He Came Home In 2005 Until Now I Have Gained Almost 85 Lbs.
I Never Had High Blood Pressure Until I Gained The Weight...
Have Recentley Started Low Carb Diet. Hope This Will Help Me Lose Weight.
Hope This Will Help Me "o". But I Have My Doubts.... Since Dh And I Were Trying 8 Yrs. With Me At A Good Weight. I Think My Ovaries Are Done Working. I Hope I Am Wrong... Seems Hopeless Sometimes....
Trying To Stay Positive, But It Is Hard Sometimes....

Sara, you mentioned in your post earlier that you were on Metformin but had an allegic reaction to it. That is a shame because when I was on it (about 1 yr.) I seemed to have lost a lot of weight. I went from a size 14 pants (borderline 16) to a 12, possibly 10. I could only think that the reason for it was because of the Metformin. You see the thing is that with the Meformin you can't have too many carbs if not any at all because it will cause you to go "boom" (diarrhea), sorry for TMI. So not being able to eat those things made me lose all that weight.
Now my RE does not want me to take the Metformin just yet but we shall see because I will see what he has in store for me next. I just got AF and have no clue what he will have me take next. My guess is he wants to get me to ovulate so he will probably get me on clomid/glucophage or something so that I can get my BFP!
Believe me, I too have been there as well as many of the other girls on here who are trying to stay positive. We're just not doing our bodies any good by making them stress. Especially when our bodies are already going through enough with PCOS, blood pressure's, insulin, imbalanced hormones, and medications. I too worry, but I try to do other things to get my mind off of worrying because if I don't, I will end up an emotional mess and then my poor DH has to come to my rescue (thank God for our DH's). It also helps if you tell your DH every little thing that is on your mind because it sure seems to help me. I am sure that he will help you through it.
Peace, Love, & Happiness.

Well...I am currently due for a baby after a horrible struggle in this room for many years. Here is what I went through....hopefully it will help someone and also give hope to not give up.
I got PG in on many forms of BC in my younger days. In 1997 I had my now 11 yr old son, he was a pill baby and the only BC baby I had survive.
After my son, I thought I was too fertile and began Depo Provera. The worst choice I ever made in my life. I was on the shot till Dec 2003. After being diagnosed with all sorts of odd disorders and having another loss (did not even know I was PG) and 70 lbs later, I stopped the shot. It took 9 mos for AF to come bac and when she did she came every 2 weeks for 7 days. I went on the Nuva ring to make her regular. I lost all my weight and my disorders disappeared. You think I would have made a connection...nope.
In 2005 I met my DH and fell madly in love with him. We decided that we would TTC right away. First month off the ring I got a BFP, followed by AF. I thought nothing of it. Many women have chemicals and as a medical professional. I knew it was common. The mext month, March 2005, another BFP followed by AF. I was now back to 2 AF's per month. I went into my gyno and told him that I had been off Depo for 15 mos and was having AF every other week. He did a u/s and told me that my lining was very thin and that I was probably not ovulating at all and if i did it was not viable. He suggested Clomid aftre getting AF normal. He put me on Prometrium from CD 14- 28 to make the 2nd AF go away. It worked and then I started Clomid in May 2005. That was the 1st cycle I had that was 28 days since stopping BC.
I got PG on round 2 in June 2005. By the beginning of July I started spotting and was getting mixed test results. I had learned at that point that this was expected after Depo use and that it could take 18+ mos to get the Depo out of me. I decided to skip a month of Clomid. I took OPKs as usual and got a pos OPK on CD 20 in Aug 2005. AF came 8 days later. I felt weird and POAS anyway and got a blazing BFP. We were elated. I was due May 13 2006, on my wedding day and DH's birthday. My GP did a blood test and said I was 4 weeks PG. Now, little did I know as i was in the middle of AF, that I was m/cing. A week later and repeat hCG my level was 7. I was devistated. I was told that I had LPD and low Progesterone. I was put on Prometrium to take from 3 DPO till AF or 12 weeks PG. It had now been 8 mos of TTC and 4 losses. I was a bit confused at what was going on. I did 3 cycles of just Prometrium to see if my body would respond on its own and to regulate port loss. Nothing happened. I began to really temp and found out I was not even 'o'ing, dispite multiple pos OPKs. I began Clomid again at 50 mg in Dec 2005. I noticed that my temp jump was not very good and that I was 'o'ing weak on 50 mg. In Jan 2006 I upped the dose to 100 mg and actually had a good ovulation, although no PG. I continued on Clomid 100 mg for many mor cycles. In April 2006 I had an HSG and all was clear. I got PG on my wedding night in May 2006 (the only time in 9 mos we had BDed with me on top). We were again elated, and thought now on Prometrium I would be safe.
In June 2006, at 6 weeks, I was losing our baby. I had no bleeding or anything to warn me...my numbers never went past 288. I stopped Prometrium and passed the baby. At this point I was POed that no one would listen to me. I was not stupid and I knew something was wrong. I knew I had PCOS yet because I was thin and had very little hair they told me no. Well, reoccuring PG loss is an indicator of PCOS as well. I was retested and they diagnosed me with PCOS finally after I lost 5 babies.
I began 1500 mg of Metformin in June 2006. We took one month off CLomid and began the 100 mg regime up in Aug 2006. I noticed my cycles and temps improved after 5-6 months post beginning Metformin. By Feb 2007, I was getting discouraged that I was still not PG. We decided that our gyno was not qualified to treat us for this issue. Little did I know how ill qualified he was. I went to an RE and found out he had never done the full m/c panal. I was tested to EVERYTHING. The RE was not convinced that I had PCOS either till she got my results. I am one of those women who my ONLY PCOS sign is high Testosterone and DHEA-S. This is where male hormones dominate the body (can be caused by prolonged hormonal BC use that shuts the production of female hormones off) and can cause repeated loss. I also found out I have MTHFR factor. My RE was very proactive and I was upped to 2000 mg of Met, 100 mg, Clomid, 10,000 mIU trigger, and 200 mg Prometrium. We also realized during this time that it appeared that the only time I got PG was if I was on top. Missionary did not seem to get me PG. I found out my cervix was tipped and that when on my back, it was not in a position for sperm transport. I then bought Instead Cups and my RE said to use them after BDing.
My 3rd cycle on my new regime and I got my long awaited BFP. I was scared to death. I thought for sure I would simply m/c again. Well, I did not. I am now just under 38 weeks PG and Rory Andrew Liam is due to come into this world at anytime now. Everything I went through, the 3 misdiagnosis, the losses, the tests, and the heartache was not only worth it...I would do it all again to get here. It is trial and error with things like POCS. I had no idea that all I needed was Metformin to not m/c. It was the missing piece of puzzle. So, don't give up. Once they find your cocktail to get and keep you PG, it will work. It just takes time to figure it all out and a good doc who will listen to you!
Andrea: Hello! Glucaphage is metformin, one is the brand name and the other is the generic name! Why does he not want you to take metformin yet? It can decrease your chances of miscarriage (not that there is evidence based research supporting it but it does-many gals on here will support it and my RE said the same thing when I asked him about it). It can help you "O" either alone or in combo with other meds. I have been doing some more reading and some of the lit I have read is saying that femara (letrozole) might be the new drug of choice for O induction rather than clomid (aka..clomood). I hope you get your BFP soon too :) You deserve it:)...ps ask him about femara!
Kimmie's story always gets me teary eyed, but is it such an inspiration and she is the reason I said F#&* it (scuse the french) we are going to see an RE! It sucks getting misdiagnosed and then having docs not listen to you. Listen to your heart and your gut!
Congrats again Kimmie! I bet you guys are anxious to meet lil Rory!
Songbird: Hi! :silly:Well, I am not an expert, but there is evidence based research linking PCOS to HTN (hypertension-which can lead to heart dz if not treated; stoke, etc.) heart dz, DM (diabetes mellitus- which can also lead to heart dz) and cancer. It is just my personal opinion that since PCOS is linked to heart Dz and that PCOS seems to be underdiagnosed/misdiagnosed that there has to be a link to the high rate of women dying from heart dz (god I hope I am making sense-still fightin this darn cold).
Anyway, in the US heart dz kills more women than any other dz or cancer. Here is a link to show you some stats about heart dz. http://www.womenheart.org/information/women_and_heart_disease_fact_sheet.asp. And here are two articles about PCOS and heart dz http://www.healthwatchcenter.com/2008/01/polycystic-ovarian-syndrome-linked-with-early-heart-disease/. http://www.womenshealthmatters.ca/news/news_show.cfm?number=384 Not just obese women are at risk for heart dz. I am barely 5'7" and weigh b/t 135-140. I have had HTN for almost 8 years now. I take aldomet to control my bp (blood pressure). I was taking Toperal XL before we started trying, but aldomet is safer to take during pg. If I was not controlling my BP...there is a chance that I could have a stroke.
This article is interesting.. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BJI/is_12_30/ai_63922871 .... studies like this are like mmmm :pokey: but I bet these women that were in this study were all treated for PCOS...this just might support my theory! (I just skimmed the article)
Anyway hope this helps some!

gotcha! I was thinking it was BP related... I have had high bp my whole life, really. Ever since I Was young, when I would go to the DR they would always ask me "is your GP typically on the higher end?" every time! LOL I started Meds a few years ago when I was having really bad, chronic migraines. I also had really bad headaches in HS, but never did anything about it.
Now, even on meds, my BP is not controlled. Today it was 160/96, argh! Last year I passed out at work bc my BP was really high and then suddenly bottomed out. They did all kinds of tests after that to check my heart and so on, I will have to find the results of the u/s, echo, and all that jazz, but I know there were several indications that I am already heading in the direction of heart disease :(
SO, this is why I Was interested. Right now I am on lisinopril. When I got PG last year the Dr chanegd me to labetolol and I Was having BP checks 2-3x a week from the DAY I got my BFP! **sigh**
Maybe you should be on a different med. I know that I had to change meds b/c it was not really controlling my BP's. I would get a new doc. I assume you have seen a cardiologist? I used to suffer from tachycardia too and had to wear a Queen of Hearts cardiac monitor for two weeks. We learned that I have a heart arrhythmia...nothing serious at this point in my life. I also used to get chronic migraines. But since I started Toperal and even the aldomet, I have not had one. BP meds can help with migraines.
PCOS is linked to high BP...I do not want to rain on any of your plans, but I would get your BP under control before getting pg. Sometimes diet and exercise can help with lowering your BP as well (in addition to meds). Get a new doc :) Have you ever heard of Pre-eclampsia/eclampsia? We are at higher risk for this since we already have pre-existing HTN (even though some women can come off their meds during pg up until late 2nd tri or into 3rd trimester...this is about the time some women are Dx with PIH-pg induced HTN). You are at a higher risk since your BP is not well controlled.
Okay well getting of the soap box again...I really hope this helps and please get the BP under control! Is your thyroid under control?

OK..I'll be next...
My doctor diagnosed me with PCOS right away in the fall of 2005 (even though I am thin and not hairy either). I did get pregnant in the spring of 2006 while taking femara. Sadly, I miscarried in the summer of 2006. Since then, I have had a D&C and surgery to remove fibroid tumors. I went back on femara in the fall of 2007 with no luck. I began femara with a trigger and iui in February 2008 with no success. I'm taking a break now. PCOS has been linked to diabetes and other medical conditions, so I am just trying to focus on being healthy (diet and exercise) right now. I guess my dh and I have been in the process for about 3 years now.

oh, dont worry... u are not "raining on my plans" :) This and other health reasons are why we are on a break right now (as u can see in my siggy :) ) My BP is one of the things we are monitoring and working on getting under control. I started on atenolol and that worked for a while, but it was still higher than my dr wanted, so it got changed to lisenopril. w/in DAYS I got PG with my first and was switched to labetolol, which I described in the previous post.... I stayed on the labetolol even after the loss since we were sill trying and figured it would be better to just stay on it... my BP gradually got higher and high and so that got switched recently back to lisenopril. Right now I Am taking 40mg but i think it needs to be higher or a new med. My DH suggested maybe a maxide or something to help. IDK... We dont have insurance right now, so I am definitely NOT seeing a cardiologist. When I passed out a year ago bc of the BP they did the same thing you were talking about where I had to wear this heart monitor around for a couple weeks. But with this you had to press the button when having an "episode" and I never had one during the time, so it was no help at all. ANYWAY...

Hello, My name is Lanette. I guess I am a newbie to the PCOS family. I went to the doctor today and she said she had no doubt that pcos is what I have. I have had a history of irregular periods for the last few years. Weight gain in my mid section and unpleasant hair growth. She said since dh and I have been trying ttc for 9 months she told me to get healthy first before anything. So I am now determined more then ever to loose weight and get healthy so i can O more regular and have more regular cycles. all dh and i want more then anything is a baby. so hopefully it happens soon for all of us ladies. Since I just found out today so I've been researching pcos and hopefully i can know more about it.
UGH...I just lost my "book" I just wrote! DOH..okay I will start over....
Songbird: I see your siggy! LOL! Have you tried applying for help thru your state for medical asst, like medicaid? Are you super duper stressed out all the time? Stress can cause your BP to go up too. Have you had your kidneys checked (U/S, labs, etc)? I am very happy to hear that you are going to get your BP and health under control before trying again! It will be soo worth it when you get that BFP:) :)
Faith: So sorry you have been going thru STC for so long and with a m/c :( Have you ever taken glucaphage? This med can decrease your chances of m/c! I assume DH has had an S/A and that you have had an HSG? Glad you are focusing on getting healthy right now! It is so important! Good luck to you :)
Lannette: Are you seeing an RE for your PCOS? What are some of the tests you have had (vag ultrasound, labs, DH S/A, etc). Glucaphage can help regulate your cycles in addition to moderate excercise and a nutritious healthy diet. Here are a couple of links to get you started if you have not already come across them! Just remember that not all woemn w/ PCOS are "textbook" which is why PCOS is diffucult to dx!

We do not qualify for medicaid bc we arent PG or have children. So frustrating! I am going to a clinic right now that is funded by grants. We had to pay $30 each to start and then all of our treatment, appts, labs, everything except meds is COVERED COMPLETELY! So, that is pretty awesome. It is hard to get to see the same Dr every time, especially OB (they are only there on thurs and fri) but it is way better than nothing, at the moment. And they have sat appts so it is easy for me to get in for gen med. I only started going there a couple weeks ago, so I am still just going through the beginning process of trying to find a med that will work for my BP. I dont think I have had anything to check my kidneys... not that I can think of...
The last year has been VERY stressful, so I am sure that hasnt helped my BP. DH was out of work for 10+ months and I was diagnosed with BPD last summer after a failed suicide attempts and week in a mental hospital. It took several months to get my own mind and body back to a good functioning state and now I am doing great and working full time again as a nanny since December. All that to say, yes I have been stressed! LOL but the last few months has been pretty good for me and DH has a job now and was accepted into a great internship program.
Good luck with the Femara! It seems like that is what everyone is doing now! LOL We are cycle buddies, too... I am on CD9 ;)
That is great you are able to go to a clinic and not have to pay a lot of $$! (please no one take offense to this but I think that the only thing I agree with Hilary Clinton so far is her statements about how we need Universal health care in this country...esp for people like yourself....again...no offense to people who are voting for her....I honestly have no opinion on who to vote for this election:shocker:). It sounds like you both have been through a lot and have become stronger! I am sorry to hear that you have struggled so much that you wanted to take your own life:comfort:. But again, is sounds like you are doing great! Keep up the positive attitude! I am glad to hear you both have been doing better! I bet being a nanny brings you a lot of joy! What does your DH do? Will he evetually be eligable for health benes? :thumbsup:I think you guys are taking the right steps to get to your BFP...even if you are on a break! :gome:

My DH was a paralegal, but was unable to find work. With the economy the way it is right now there are a LOT of people out of work in cali, so he would interview and get really good reviews from the people (and even feedback after the fact) and was always told he was great and had good qualifications, but they hired someone with much more experience *ARGH!* for a couple there were even ATTORNEYS taking paralegal positions just to get work... he couldnt compete with that. So now he is sub teaching and will start teaching full time in the fall while working in the internship program. In this program you are hired like a reg teacher... full pay and benefits and EVERYTHING! They take the cost of the classes right out of the paychecks and he takes night classes a couple days a week to get his credential. It is pretty awesome!
Thanks for all the encouraging words! I am going to call and make an appt for next sat with a gen pract. to see what we can do about BP meds. I will ask about the ones u suggested- Thanks!
I wont be a great cycle buddy since I am not gonna be BDing or testing, though LOL But I can encourage YOU nonetheless!
That is awesome! Maybe the timing will be perfect! He'll get his teaching cert and you'll get your BP figured out and your other health "stuff" he'll get his benes and then you guys will get your BFP:)
That is okay...we can still be cycle buddies :) We can encourage each other:)

that last one is awesome (the crude language in regards to PCOS is MUCH DESERVED! It is horrible!)
I spent a long time watching several different videos... I am glad people are trying to get the word out about PCOS. Awareness is the key!
I agree about the language...I was laughing so hard I had to start it over b/c I missed parts of it. It is soo **** true!
I really am getting into learning as much as I can about PCOS (not just b/c I have it, but b/c I am a nurse an I can make a difference and education is KEY :) I know I am such a dweeb!

Hi ladies...I got off BC over a month ago, my endo doctor wants run test to see if I have PCOS since my AF is irregular and I have acne...Is it true that I have to be off BC for about 4 months to test me? Did any of you experience this?

Ok.. I guess I will tell my story too.
I've had bad hormone imbalances since I was in my early teens.. Very irregular. When I was 17 my doctor put me on Bc and I had a reaction to it and bleed for two months straight.. the month after coming off the pill from the bad reaction I got pregnant with my DS who is now 17 years old. I was 18 when I had him. After that I was NPP for many years.. dealing with all the symptoms of PCOS.. just didn't know it was PCOS.. I went years with out an AF at all.. Was put back on BC and had another reaction.. they changed the pill and it did the same thing.. Anyways.. I went on to have two m/c with in a year a part.. In 2001 My high school sweet heart/the father of my Son and I got married, the same year I had another M/c and then was Dx with PCOS.. MY doctor told me he felt sure I had had many chemicals over the years without knowing and told me it's common with PCOS. He then placed me on 50mg of Clomid and had me start charting, I did Clomid for 6 months and then took 6 months off. I changed Ob/gyn's when we moved here... and he placed me back on Clomid.. I did 6 more months of clomid and then was placed on Provera for a year because I do not ovulate on my own, therefor was going without AF's. I tried many herbs and dieting to help me and nothing worked.. So in March of 2007.. I was fed up and decided to go to an RE clinic.. I had an HSG done.. all clear.. I was placed on 100mg of Clomid.. and was ovulating well on it.. Progsterone #'s were great. I was put on a Baby Aspirin and vitamins. In July I had a Chemical and demanded more testing.. At that time they found out I had hypothyroidism and I was put on Synthroid 50mcg, this took about 8 weeks to get into normal range... I continued with the Clomid.. In Oct. they finally put me on Metformin for insulin resistance. I did 8 cycle of Clomid in 2007 and one cycle of 5mg of Femara. We took a O-drug break in Jan, Feb and Mar of 2008 due to medical reasons and $$. I did O those three months for the first time on my own in a very long time but had LP problems.. April I did a round of Femara/Follistim/Trigger which ended with AF and am now on CD 6, 4th day of 80 iu's of Follistim... So we will see what this month brings.
So that's my story.. It's been over 6 years of constant TTC now and I'm praying and hoping for a miracle..

Hi liljazzy, How long were you on BC? How long have you been ttc? When were you dx with endo?
At your age it's hard to say what the acne is coming from.. but yes it can cause irregular cycles and acne in some women. It can also cause many other things.. Being on BC can also cause women to be irregular for a while after stopping the pill. Most doctors like for you to try for 6 months to a year after stopping the pill to see if you become normal if not then they do blood work to check hormone levels and u/s to check for cyst.. This is to determine weather you have PCOS or not.
The sooner you get tested for PCOS the better!
I did not have acne until I got off BCP, my acne is not bad...but never having problems with it before it is bad to me....no pitting or anything like that.
They should test your thyroid, "girly" labs, DHEA, testosterone, fasting blood sugar, HA1C! Vag U/S to check follies (cysts)...not everyone who has PCOS has a lot of cysts though either...and note everyone who has a lot of cysts has PCOS.
Good luck!

Thanks Michelle!! Good Luck to you this cycle too!!
LOL.. I thought you would like the Femara better! What Mg do they have you on?
Yea.. HCG's are NOT fun what so ever!!
HOw is the glucaphage treating you?
Thanks! Oh yes....I am so glad I will never have to take Clomid again! Sheesh that stuff is enought to make someone want to commit themselves!
I am taking 2.5mg of femara. I responded to 50mg of Clomid and the very first patient he started out on 5mg of femara ended up with triplets...."ka-winky-dink" he is not sure, but he does not want to take the chance!
He gave me 6 weeks worth of free Glucaphage. It is the really expensive stuff, so I have not had too bad of GI symptoms. Mild nausea and that is about it! I started out on 500mg, then tonight I move up to 1000mg...I sure hope that I don't get sick tonight from it since I am at work! :X
Where are you at in your cycle? Are you 10DPO? Sorry, I don't chart b/c I work nights (I tried and gave up...kind of impossible to chart BBT :)).

Today I went for a follow-up visit after taking my 1st round of Clomid (in over a year) and I am so confused. First of all, my RE looked at the lining of endometrium and said it looked good but he had seen something that looked like dark spots (which he descibed as looking like swiss cheese holes) and will study them because he'd claimed he hadn't seen that before.
My second thing is that he was unable to see my left ovary because it is very hard to see even with the vaginal u/s probe, believe me...he tried his hardest. On the other hand he was able to see my right ovary and saw that the follicles in there were smaller than he would like them to be.
And here is some information to let you know how this cycle has bee for me:
Enjuvia 0.45 mg x 14 days
Prometrium x 6 days
CD Started 5/5 - Ended 5/7
Clomid CD 4-8
U/S 5/14
Follow-up U/S & consultation 5/19
Please let me know what you all think about my cycle, I would greatly appreciate another take on it. Oh, and I forgot to mention that FF says I will possibly be fertile from 5/16 to 5/18 and I am "supposed" to ovulate on 5/19. I am fairly new to using FF and also took a long break from TTC so I had not charted in close to 8 months, so I can't actually go by much information because none was entered. So as I said before, I would love to hear someone else's opinion on it.
Thanks all!

Yea..I know what you mean about the clomid.. Isn't it nice not having any clo-moods??? LOL
WOW.. Femara is suppose to be a little less of a chance of multiplies. If you were Oing on 50mg of Clomid then 2.5 mg of Femara is perfect.
What's dose are you working your way up to on the Glucaphage? I'm on the generic Metformin I take 1700mg. I did two weeks on 850mg and then moved up to 1700mg.. I had a little bit of GI problems.. but was ok after a couple of days..
I'm on CD 6, 4th day of Follistim. GROOOOOW FOLLIES GROOOOOW!!!!
Andrea, Not sure how much I can help you....but you should O anywhere from 5-8 (or more) days after your last dose of Clomid. Your AF sounds like my AF...short...I would use some pre-seed on the days you :bding:! Clomid can dry up your CM. That is strange he could see your left ovary. Have you had an HSG yet?
Good luck!
Paula...Clomooody psyhco beotch is no more!
I know that is crazy about the femara and multiples. I am just glad my RE likes to play it safe! I hope this is the right cocktail of meds to get me my:bfp::silly:
I started out on 500mg and am now at 1000mg, which is am sure will be my max dose. I need to ask him if I will stay on it for the entire pg once it does happen! I have heard some peeps do and some do not.
:babydust:! Grow follies grow:silly:
RE said last week that I had some good size follies on my left side (my dominant O side (CD4 he did not want to see them bigger than 15...they were 10-13) and then my right side he saw several small ones. I will find out Friday how much bigger they are. I think they have been a-growing like craazy cuz I been cramping! :bding: A lot despite our colds!

Hello! Thank you so much for this thread. I just met with my DR this week and we are testing for PCOS. I spent 2 hours at Borders reading books about this and was totally enlightened. I have had symptoms since I was a teenager and didn't know it. I've been in the TTC room since Oct and had read many ladies talking about PCOS and what they were going thru. This made call for an appt with my DR and she was so helpful in wanting to start testing. I do have a few questions and hopefully I can learn from some of you here.
I am getting my glucose test done tomorrow. She gave me the referral for the HSG and AD test for DH. She said I can do it when i want, but is there a better order to this process? Should I do it right away or wait a while? She gave me a script for Prometrium 200mg to start CD12, which I have to wait until next cycle to start.
Just looking for some feedback that this seems like a good start to getting things under control. TIA!!
Welcome happilimarried! Glad to hear that you have been doing research. Education is the first step to getting control of your fertility!
Well, depends on how agressive you want to be with TTC. I would get it done asap since you have orders for it rather than wait. This can allieviate a lot of stress (or add if they find something wrong....but then you have to think that if something is wrong- you can get it fixed or treated quicker depending on the problem).
FYI the HSG is not the most comfortable thing in the world...some women do not complain of a lot of pain.....but whew...mine hurt like a &%$#@&*! My friend had one too and she said it hurt a lot. The good thing is that the pain does not last but for maybe 5 mins....if that! But it can also help flush your tubes out if you have gunk in em'! This test is considered diagnositic....but it really can be therapeutic. Many women get pg within 3 mos after having it done (of course this will all depend on your situation).
Good luck and keep us posted!
PS. Had f/u U/S.....:silly:
Edometrial lining up from 4 to 8
21cm folly on left side
hCG injection (ovidrel) this am
should O by 10-1030 tomorrow night

So, my insulin test came back normal. That's good. I know this is crazy but I was a little disappointed not to a have a little excuse for the sudden weight gain over the last 2 years. BLAH! Guess it's just me!
That is great! The wt gain can be related to the PCOS if you have it! Not everyone who has PCOS has insulin problems! What other labs did they do?

I am so glad to see there is a support thread for all the many women suffering the wrath of PCOS. I too have a story similar to those I read in this thread. I wanted to share something more important with you all though. I was blessed with a daughter 12 years ago when I was only 18 and this disease definately will and is affecting her too as well. I am lucky my fertility doctor is also a pediatric gynecologist and mentioned to watch her as well. She started her period last October and already her u/s proved to be cystic. We have decided to put her on the pill to regulate and control her hormone levels so she does not suffer the same pain and heart ache that goes with years of TTC. I urge you all to watch you daughters and even your nieces closely so they can be protected!
I wish I found APA when I was TTC, the support here is overwhelming!
CdnBaby thank you for your thoughts :)

That's just it, they are not doing any other test! The next test I'll be doing is the HSG...what other test should they be doing? TIA
They only tested your sugars? Mmmm...they should be checking your DHEA and testosterone levels. I cannot remember but did they ck your thyroid? Mmm..lets see...what else....not related to PCOS but have they tested you for Chlamydia? There are not really any symptoms, most people who have it don't even know it until they are trying to get pg.

Already on thyroid meds, very low dose and had my 6 month check up and everything was in line. No to Chlamydia, I've been tested years ago for STDs and my DH and I have been together for 10 years.
Thanks for the info! I'll see what the doc wants to do next after the HSG.
Well, that settles that! But what about the DHEA and testosterone?
You are expecting AF soon right? Just make sure you take 600-800 mg of Motrin one hr before the HSG....unless your doc prescribed you something else!

Andrea

well, I am back! She did the Methyldopa/Aldomet which sounded awesome to me. She wants me to be checking mhy BP at home (I have a cuff and I check it often) and to let her know if my bp stays high or goes higher and we will up my dose. I am to go back to see her in a month to talk with her about how it is going. So, YEA! One more step closer to a healthy pregnancy! (and, hey.... losing the weight will probably help with the BP too ;) )
Hurray! Oh...should have warned you before you got the script...you will be peeing a lot more on this med...least I do! ...prep for pg! LOL! Make sure you keep your BP cuff calibrated b/c that can cause false readings if it is not calibrated often.

i wanted to know if anyone here would be able to offer me some advice. i have always had irregular periods and when my husband and i ttc it took us a year and half ( i also took clomid during the time, but it didn't work.), we now have our son. we are ttc again but my cycles have been extremely irregular, about 70 days, 45 days, 34 days, etc. i just went to the doctor and he said that i have polycystic ovaries. however, he took blood work (previously when i came in after my 70 day cycle) and everything is normal. are there any suggestions on how to conceive with this difficulty?

Have you sought the help of an RE? I can tell you that my cycles were irregular (23-32 days...apparently not normal to vary that much....which I knew...but 2 GYNs did not think so) and they were REALLLLYYY SHORT...may as well of not had one a period at all. Anyway, my first GYN said that my labs were normal and my 2nd said that I possibly had poor ovarian reserve. I asked another GYN I worked with and she said yeah your labs are a little off but not indicating PCOS. This is why PCOS is often underdiagnosed. My very first visit with RE....guess what I have PCOS.
Sometimes if you have a mild form of PCOS you can be "normal" for a couple of months and other months be off. I would either get a second opinion or go see a specialist. But you can have polycystic ovaries and not have PCOS and vice-versa. If infact you do have PCOS it is very important to get help since it is not only the leading cause of infertility, but if left untreated it can lead to cancer and heart disease. ...did you read the links on the very first post of this tread? If you do have PCOS you can take metformin to help regulate your hormones and cycles (you do not have to be insulin resistant to take this...there are lots of us who take this med and do not have insulin resitance...like me!
This is not meant to be medical advice...but to help you advocate for your health!
Good luck and keep us posted!

I am reading this very informative book about PCOS...more medical based rather than for lay people.
Also, I am mailing Paula a book called "Polycsystic Ovary Syndrome A woman's guide to identifying and managing PCOS". There is another person after her that might be interested in reading it....so let us know who wants it next and we will get it to you...we can call it the "cysterhood of the traveling PCOS book" ...LOL!

So I have not been to the dr to even be tested to see if anything is wrong but I figured I would ask you gals since you seem to know what you are talking about.
With PCOS, do you have any pain in the area of where your ovaries would be?? Also, with the whole hair thing, like how much hair and where would the hair be??
With the irregular periods, HOW irregular would they be? My periods are not REAL irregular but they tend to not always be the same. History of periods is :
Nov 12
Dec 10
Jan 8
Feb 28
Mar 24
Apr 19
May 19
I finally started to write them down because before that they were kind of crazy. I got married on July 28th (and started my period the same day) and then I didnt get my period again until Oct. So I was without it for 2 months.
My periods used to be SO normal before I started the DEPO shot! I have been off of it for almost 2 years now. I only had one cycle of it.
If someone could give me some info that would be great! THANKS!!!

Well, it looks like you have cycles anywhere from 24-35+ days. Some say that cycles shorter 26 and longer than 32 days are considered irreguluar and indicate that you may not be ovulating. How long do you bleed for?
I would go to your OB and have them draw some CD3 labs (FSH and LH) and CD21 (progesterone). This labs will help with determining if you are ovulating and if your hormones are all coo-coo. Also make sure they do a pelvic U/S to look for cysts and at endometiral lining. Also have them check your thyroid, testesterone levels and fasting blood sugar and HA1C.
Tell them you suspect you have PCOS. If they blow you off....find a new doc!
Anyone can have pain (mittlesmertz) where your ovaries are. Typically this pain is caused during ovulation. How servere is the pain and how often do you get it during your cycle?
The hair thing can be on your face, breasts, belly, back...anywhere a women would not want it. Your hair on your head can thin out too.
Good luck and keep us posted:winks:
Okay so this is some info I got from a book I am reading about PCOS....this is in reference to follicle #'s...
Of course we all know that as we age our follicle #'s decline therefore leading to decreased fertility. However, during this time of aging (late 30's) a polycysitc ovay may actually start to normalize = may regulate cycles and may lead to increased fertility in those of us w/ PCOS.....
I found that to be verrrrrrry interesting:)

I usually bleed for about 4 days. My periods are pretty normal. Not to heavy. No cramping during them.
The pain is not severe. Its nothing something that would stop me dead in my tracks! I just feel it sometimes randomly!
I think if my DH and I are not prego by our anniversary, then I will go the doctor and have everything checked out!! Thanks so much for answering my questions!!!!

I have PCOS.
I have always been a skinny girl. Sick skinny. I was 110-115 pounds from the time I entered high school, until right before my sophomore year of college. That is when things went wrong.
I had always eaten what I wanted without regard for carbs or sugar or portion size - not that I ate a lot - quite the opposite, I ate like a bird - but I was never careful about food. Then, almost exactly on my 19th birthday, I started gaining weight, and fast. I met DH shortly after my weight gain started, and from Sept 2004 to Oct 2005 (we got married in that year), I gained 50 lbs. My periods had never really been "regular." Sometimes 4 weeks apart, sometimes 6 or 7 - there wasn't a real pattern.
After much discussion, DH and I agreed we didn't feel right, given our religious convictions, to be using birth control. I had been on the pill for 6 months and it made me horribly ill - nightly vomiting, insomnia, fatigue during the day, and I was getting 4 or 5 migraines a month. When I went off of it, I expected things to change.
They didn't.
I went off BCPs in November of 2005. It is now June of 2008. I am not and have never been pregnant, despite wanting it so badly (granted, DH was deployed for a year during this time, but that's still a long time to be without child).
In March 2006, I thought I might pregnant (I was not) and found APA. Someone on here saw my symptoms and asked if I thought I might have PCOS. I had to research it more. I saw that I had the frequent urination, rapid unexplained weight gain, irregular periods or not getting them at all, extreme fatigue, dark facial hair, and acne. I went to two doctors in Virginia, and neither was willing to help me. We moved shortly after, and I visited a doctor in NC, who was much more helpful. She ran some blood tests, determined I DO have PCOS, and put me on an introductory dose of Metformin, with instructions to see her colleague, as she was retiring in two weeks.
I saw him, and he said I did NOT have PCOS. I had not had a period in 72 days. He refused to give me more metformin, or anything to start my cycle.
I cried and cried and cried. I saw another doctor. She said I did have PCOS but refused me medicine or help. She said if I'd "just lose weight" the PCOS would get better. She didn't seem to know that without metformin, a PCOS brain believes it is starving, and will not allow weightloss to take place. I was devastated.
Finally, I got a referral to a REAL OB/GYN (frickin military!!!). I showed him some pictures and the blood tests the first diagnosising doctor had done. He said there was NO QUESTION that I had PCOS. He even explained it to my skeptical and bewildered husband. He prescribed me metformin. I was elated.
DH deployed not three weeks after that, and I started the metformin, and also the Nutrisystem diet. I was finally able to lose weight! I lost 22lbs, and noticed that while my cycles were not ideal, they did seem to be settling into a nice 7 week pattern. Predictability is better than nothing.
Then, I started taking Vitex in Oct 2007. My migraines FINALLY went away! I can now go MONTHS without them. Better than that, the vitex started shortening my cycles, bringing on ovulation by 2-4 days sooner each cycle. I was down to 32 day cycles when DH returned from Iraq in Jan 2008 - nearly normal.
When my Jan AND Feb cycles turned out to be a complete bust, I visited my OB/GYN again. He gave me clomid. Little did I know that clomid was the WORST thing for me. I'm already going blind, and it turns out that a side effect of clomid is temporary vision loss that sometimes becomes PERMANENT. Luckily for me, it was just temporary, but that is not a risk I can take again.
Before my first cycle on Clomid ended, we were to find out that DH is deploying AGAIN. He was supposed to be home over a year. Instead, he will only be home about 8 months, with one month of that being spent away on a training mission.
I gained back 11 of the pounds I lost while he was gone. I am determined that PCOS will not defeat me. I may not be able to take ovulation inducers, but I WILL become pregnant. I started Weight Watchers last week and have already lost 4.4 lbs. I am hoping the reduction in weight will correlate to an increase in fertility.
Either way, I will not PCOS dictate who I am, and I will not let it rule my life.

Ashleigh thank you for sharing your story! You have been through so much over these last couple of years. ITA with your last sentence! We have PCOS...PCOS does not have us!
Hey, I had visual problems on Clomid so my RE has me on femara (not FDA approved for O induction-but it works)- less side effects! Also, do you have high blood pressure? I used to get migraines before I was put on BP meds!

Of course and good luck! Are you using OPK's to see when you are Oing?
Thank you! I am not. I tried to chart for a little bit but I got to stressed. So I am not real sure of when I O or if I am even O'ing. When I had my anual pap back in feb my gyno said that right now DH and I could have a harder time getting prego and that my periods could be really wacky due to the fact that I am overweight. She said that if my weight got under control that I would have an easier time getting prego and my periods would be a little more normal. So right now I am trying to lose some weight in hopes that it will help me!

One of the ladies on here lost wt on the South Beach diet. She also has PCOS.
Hi.
I just miscarried and am afraid that I have PCOS. I had a hormone imbalance from my early teens. The hormone comes from my adrenal gland. My cycles are really long. I didn't ovulate till day 30 of my cycle this past time. My doctor isn't the best - I am currently shopping for a new one - and she isn't all about testing me. I need to ask for specific tests.
How did you get diagnosed?
I told 3 GYN's that I suspected I had PCOS and all 3 so no. I sought the help of an RE and my first visit with him he dx me with PCOS. They will drawn a panel of labs such and sometimes they will want them drawn on certain cycle days. They will also do a pelvic ultrasound to look at your ovaries.
Typical labs are FSH, LH, progesterone, testesterone, HA1C, fasting blood sugar to name a few.
How old are you and how long have you been TTC?

Yeah I read about that! It gave me great hope! :) Hopefully it is just my weight that is keeping us from conceiving a child! I guess time will tell! Thanks so much for all the info!

Hi ladies,
I was just recently diagnosed with PCOS. Does anyone know if there is any connection to long term pill use?
My story: As a teen I had horrible cycles, vomiting, migraines, etc. At 17 my doctor decided to put me on the pill to control/regulate them. After 12 years I was finally ready to start a family, so I quit 12/07. Each month the cycles got longer: 33, 37, 43, and 50 days. I initially attributed the length to stress; I internalize everything and often have difficulty relaxing. Then in June 2007 I got pregnant. I was elated, and strangely enough, felt great. To make a long story short during my first sonogram we learned that there was no heartbeat (11 weeks). To make it worse, I had no indication that the pregnancy had ended. Fetal development ended at approx. week nine. My new ob/gyn thinks the pregnancy was luck.
Since then, the cycles have been as follows: 54, 37, 37, 42, 56 days. Currently I am on cycle day 63 with no end in sight.
My weight has been a factor too, consistently creeping upward regardless of the healthy choices I have been making. I want to get the weight off and I am quite discouraged by my appearance. Other than the South Beach diet any tried and true methods?
My new ob/gyn is going to start me on 50mg of Clomid whenever this cycle ends. Based on my history, will the OPK's give me a good indication of the "O"? I can't chart because I am an inconsistent sleeper. Maybe if I had been able to chart I would have found out earlier I am not ovulating.
Any thoughts, suggestions, and information are greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much in advance,
Maria

First of all to all the new ladies on this thread WELCOME:)
Maria,
I am sorry for you loss :(
Okay, not 100% sure if long term BCP correlates with PCOS. PCOS is a dysfuntion of the endocrine system. Typically patients are treated with BCP to regulate your cycles (esp. of you are trying to prevent pg). PCOS is something that we are born with, but it may take years for you to present with symptoms if any. I am not sure that BCP exacerbates it or not, it is possible.
Have you read the previous posts about how it is treated esp for those that are TTC?
Exercise and eating a balanced diet are important to help lose wt. I am fortunate that I have not had the struggle of wt issues as some of the other ladies on here with PCOS have. I do hope that someone is able to help you with that. I can tell you that I would avoid your simple carbs like (candy, cakes, etc.), stay away from fast food places, try not to eat out, eat foods that are processed (frozen meals, canned foods, boxed foods as they are loaded with tons of salt and calories). Drink plenty of water, eat lot of fresh veggies and fruits. Try to eat fish at least once a week (if you do not like fish you can eat flax seed or other foods that have omega-3's in them or take a supplment). If you drink pop...stop...even the diet stuff is bad for you (I have heard that if it had Splenda in it is is supposed to be okay). I did gain some wt (10lbs) about 10 years ago after I had to have surgery and I lost it just by cutting out pop.
What are some things that you like to eat?
Some say that depending on the severity of the PCOS OPK's can give you false readings. The best way to know that you O'd is have a 21 day or 7dpo progesterone test done. You can still use the OPK's just be wary. I was getting false results before I started taking fertility meds, but now I know they are accurate b/c of the u/s I have a couple times throughout the month for follow-up. But I also have a milder form/aytpical PCOS.
When you say you are dicouraged by your appearance are you referring to the wt or other physical signs that PCOS can cause?
Okay, I think I have bombarded you with enough info now and hope that you're not wanting to do :pokey: this to me!
Let us know if you have any other questions! This info is also not to take the place of medical advice! I hope what ramblin I said helped some! (Sorry I work nights and had little sleep and am still very )
Good luck and keep us posted!

Xevy,
Thanks for the fast post!
Since BCP's can be used to regulate hormones, I wonder if I would have presented symptoms sooner had I not been on them for so many years? I also found out that as a young woman my mom had hormonal imbalance issues and could not get pregnant. They put her on the pill for two years and when she got off she got pregnant. PCOS was never mentioned, but with the often missed diagnosis, who is to say she didn't suffer from it too?
As far as my food intake, I do prefer the fresh items like salad, fruit, lean meats, and fish, but at times they are not convenient. I have to laugh because I gave up soda in February, began drinking tons of water, started eating salads for lunch and yet I gained 7-8 pounds, go figure? I even use the wishbone spray dressing so I can accurately monitor the amount. I do enjoy sweets as much as the next person, but my DH doesn't eat them, so we don't keep them in the house unless I bake a homemade cheese cake.
Pizza is a weakness too, but we don't order it too often because only one place delivers out here. Overall, I don't think I eat badly. I do need some help with portion control, but when I cut back I am hungry two hours later, just like now. Guess I'll drink another glass of water.
Thanks for the OPK info too. My earlier results were less than stellar too, and at least now I know why. I will be speaking with my doctor tomorrow to discuss DH's SA results. I imagine at this time she will tell me how often I will need monitored.
My appearance issues are predominantly weight related, but I am getting more dark hairs on my chin. I need to get sugared again. My hair seems more dry and brittle than usual too, making it a frizzy mess(you have to love naturally curly hair). Plus, I break out now and I never did as a teen. Some factors are probably related, some are not.
I guess I will just have to wait and see where this journey takes me.
I appreciate all your insight and I hope to be in touch frequently. Thanks so much for being such an active member of this thread!

STC MC #1 8/07 New PCOS diagnosis Clomid 50mg to follow.
Maria,
Hello again! Yeah, I thought that saaaaame thing about the correlation of BCPs and PCOS symptoms being "dormant" while you're taking them! At least the hormone imbalances can be treated with meds other than BCPs. Esp if you are TTC. I take femara (I also did 3 cycles of Clomid) to help me O and I also take glucaphage (metformin). And yes...I am the poster-child for misdiagnosis of PCOS....that would be 3 GYNs....yes 3 told me I did not have it.
Anyway, sounds like you eat like me. I love sweets and Pizza. Not a big soda drinker...I crave them every once and a while. OMG that would figure that you would gain rather than loose. DOH! We do not usually keep a lot of sweets in the house either. Every so often I will have some junky things to eat just b/c they sound good! Ohh homemade cheesecake sounds wonderful right now!
You will have to keep me posted on what the doc says tomorrow ...or rather what they said today for your DH's S/A!
As far as the wieght ck with some of the other gals that have PCOS. Like Paula would be a good one! I would also ask your doc about putting you on glucaphage (this can help decrease chances of m/c [ despite what other's might say] and also help regulate your hormones). Crap...I wished I would have read this last night before your appt. :( Sorry :( Is the hair bad on your chin? There are treatments like electolysis you can do to get rid of it! Oh and the acne...I use tea-tree oil w/ vitamin E (it is an ointment) to help clear them lil *******s right up! I was the same way no zits till I turned 25...oddly enough it was not long after I stopped taking the pill...mmmm...
And you are most certainly welcome. Glad I could help!
Talk to you soon
Michelle

Hello all, I am sorry that I have been away for so long. I have just started a new job and do not have any time for myself. Well from my last post I can honestly say that I am a little bit more at ease and that I feel more confident. My RE has put me on Femara, finally!!! I am so excited...I start my first doses tomorrow. I just hope that this frug does the trick. It would be nice to know just how long some of you have been on Femara (like how many cycles) because I don't want it to drag out again like with the Clomid.
Oh and thanks a bunch Xevy, you are always there to help and give advice to all of us TTC'ers. I really do appreciate all of you here and hope that one day we will all have out BFP!
Below I will enter my info for this month:
Prometrium 100mg CD31-36
AF 6/11-My guess is 6/13
Femara 2.5mg twice daily CD3-7
Also, I don't know if anyone cares but I have had a bad month so far...I have had both food poisening and a Urinary Tract Infection. For those of you who are religious, please pray for me. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for all your support, goodnight!

Hurray for femara! I am on my 2nd round of it and it is way better than Clomid! I hope you get your BFP soon and sorry you have had a rough month! Get better and take good care of yourself...your lil baby will need it too!
Also you are very welcome! Glad I can help!:winks:

Hi Michelle and all the other wonderful PCOS ladies,
I received DH's S/A results yesterday and the news was excellent. She didn't give me exact numbers but she said he was above the normal range in count and they were good strong swimmers. A least something sounds good for a change.
Today is cycle day 65. My physician called in a script for Provera to jump start the process, but DH doesn't want me to start it until after vacation. He said "Do you really want to be worrying about AF while at the beach?" I know it would be a major hassle, but it is one step closer to the ultimate goal. Anyone have the Provera work before the 10 days of pills are finished?
As for my weight gain, she is ordering a fasting/insulin test for when we return. Maybe that will shed some light on it. Also, she doesn't feel the need to do much monitoring during the first 3 months of Clomid, she just said to call if I have any pain or unusual side effects. Should that be a red flag?
As for the chin hair, I like the sugaring process. It doesn't hurt as much as waxing and the hair should come in finer after several appointments. I have had two so far and I don't notice much difference, but I will remain cautiously optimistic.
I use Murad for the acne. They have a nice system and it works pretty well when followed properly. I have had to get away from it for the last week because of the sun exposure warnings; I don't want to have a bad reaction at the beach.
Hopefully I will get one more chance to check in before we leave. However, if I don't have an awesome week and tons of baby dust to all of you!
Thanks Again!
Maria

Ok. I'm posting in here to see if any of you have had similar symptoms. I have not been diagnosed with anything yet. We have been TTC for 1 year. During that time, I've had very long and irregular cycles. During all but 2 of them, I have gotten a positive OPK and then AF came around 14 days later. I have low progesterone- likely from weak ovulation. My doc mentioned a LPD once- due to low progesterone and spotting during LP. I have had 3 suspected early miscarriages. I have had bad acne since a couple of months after getting off the pill. I've gained about 10 pounds since getting of BCP (some of that may have been 1 month of Clomid), which puts me about 20 pounds over ideal weight. For the last 2 cycles I have had lower back pain that last until mid-cycle (long after AF ends). I have also had gastrointestinal problems for the past year (abdominal pain, diarrhea, etc.) So bad that docs thought it was galstones, but never showed up on u/s. Also, I was on depo for 1 year around 5 years ago and bled the entire time I was on it. I have a sneaking suspicion that this has something to do with my problems now. Lastly, infertility.
I'm thinking maybe endometriosis or PCOS. I have an appt. with my doc on June 20th, because I'd like to know what is causing these symptoms. Up until this point, my doc has been concerned with getting me pregnant and not really finding out was is wrong. I'm a little concerned about this. Oh, I should say that she did check my LH/FSH levels and they were OK. Also checked thyroid, fasting glucose and insulin and they were OK too. What other tests should be done?
Thanks Ladies!

Welcome babyhopes! Wow...sounds like you could have one or both (PCOS of endo). Have you had a pelvic u/s done, what about DHEA and testosterone levels checked? Just an FYI....I had all my labs checked my my first GYN and I was told they were all normal too...not saying this is the case for you...but sometimes it does not hurt to get a second opinion. Esp. since PCOS is the leading cause of infertility and it is often misdiagosed. Did you read the article I posted a few posts up?
They can check your ovaries and your endo lining with the u/s. If they suspect you have endo they may want to do a biopsy of your endometrium.
Oh..they can also check yout HA1C...this will tell the docs if you have insulin issues-this shows how well your sugars have been controlled over a longer period of time.
Good luck with your appt....and of course the only way to know is to get checked out and if you are told that you are okay and nothing is wrong, but you suspect that something is still wrong...get another opinion.
How long have you been TTC? Have you thought about seeing an RE?
Good luck!

Thanks Xevy! Those are all great suggestions! We have been TTC for 1 year. I am seeing an RE. We start IUIs with Clomid in August. I guess we will be able to see my ovaries and uterine lining on the CD14 u/s during our August Clomid/IUI cycle, but I'd hate to wait until that cycle and then find out something is wrong and we needed to do something else. KWIM?
Thanks again!

Yeah KWUM! So, has DH had an S/A? Cannot remember if you said he had one or not! When did you start seeing the RE? I am suprised they did not do an u/s on your first consult or that you have not had one at all. Have you mentioned your concerns with him about endo and PCOS?

I was on femara and progesterone for 5 days to boost the whole progesterone deal and then was told to take metformin about 2 mths ago. I had an HSG done and nothing seems to be wrong so I got pissed and quit taking everything cus I was fed up. I know bad attitude:( , I dont have PCOS but they were treating it like I did.:headbang: so i dont get it, should i keep taking metformin till I get a BFP??

DH did have a S/A. His results were: Count 171.6 mil; Motility 47%; Total Motile 80.7 million; Morphology 2%.
I think that they probably haven't done a u/s because my insurance doesn't cover anything related to infertility. My doctor's appt. tomorrow is with my OBGYN and I'm hoping that she will do one and code it as something else.

Okay so I took Femara on CD3-7, so when am I supposed to BD or ovulate for that matter. I am so bad at timing everything. I am just BDing every two days just to be sure, but FF says that I am fertile CD14-16 and am supposed to ovulate CD17-29??? That seems out-of-whack to me...what do you think? Any ideas or responses are very much appreciated! :)

FF says that I am fertile CD14-16
To be safe I would start BDing CD10 thru CD19. I would recommend OPKs so that you will have a better idea of when you get a surge. When you get the + than it says you will O 12-48 hrs later. But I seem to O the say night I get the +. You want to bd before the O so that the sperm is waiting for the egg. Good luck!!

Hello! Since the morphology is only 2% are you going to do IUI. I have heard that vitamins can help with morphology issues. Ask around on the boards...oh..wait...here is the name of a vitamin that some of the gals DH use pycenogenol. You can get it at GNC and most vitamin stores. Did you end of having an u/s? I hope so!:winks:

Yes. 1st IUI in August. DH is taking fertility vitamins (FertilAId)
I didn't get an ultrasound. Dr. seemed pretty sure it wasn't PCOS due to LH/FSH ratio. She's thinking more endo and wants me to have a laparoscopy by my RE. I shoud hear something back from her on Monday.

Hi Michelle and the other PCOS ladies,
Hello! Vacation was a blast! We returned last evening and are now trying to recuperate :) I can happily say AF arrived on day 71 on her own; I had planned to begin the Provera once we got back, but I am glad I didn't have to go that route. My first round with Clomid begins Tuesday, I am to take it days 5-9. On what day should I begin the OPK's? Should we BD every other day or every day? How long should this cycle be? Will it be the coveted "28" days or longer?
I am going for a fasting insulin test tomorrow. Can I still take my vitamins in the morning or should I wait until after the exam? Is there an ideal time for the test?
By the way, Michelle, thanks for posting that excellent PCOS article! I sent the article to a few people who are confused about what I am experiencing.
I look forward to your thoughts!
Also, good luck Andrea! Tons of baby dust to you!

Hi MCHap,
I took Clomid on CD 5-9 and was told to BD every other day from CD10-CD18. Once you get the positive OPK, you can switch to every day if there are no male fertility issues. I would start OPKs on CD10 too. Your cycle should be shorter this time. I had very long cycles and the first month I was on Clomid I ovulated on CD14 and had a 28 day cycle. Good luck to you!

Hello ladies,
I am new to the group. I found this after doing some research on Femara. I was recently dx with PCOS:indifferent: Here's a "little" about me.
I hope that you like to read books because I like to write them. My DH and I have been married for almost 10 years. We have known each other almost all of our lives. We dated after we graduated from high school. We got married and 6 months after that we started TTC. I came off of BCP and didn't have a AF for 4 months. I went to my GYN and he put me on Provera. I had an AF in April, 1 in May and POW was PG in June.
Everything seemed to be running smooth. I was 16 wks and had the AFP test done. It came back positive for DS. I had an amino and everything came back normal. At 20wks I had an u/s that showed that my son had severe Hydocephalus (extra fluid on the brain). My dr sent me to a specialist and he said that there was nothing to do but wait, or have an abortion. With that out of the question... I started doing research day and night. A friend of my mom's told me about a website that had info about fetal surgery. I went to it and emailed a doctor that preforms surgery on babies inutero in Nashville Tn. To make a very long story short. I was choosen to go to Nashville to have tests run to see if we were able to have surgery.
After a few days of tests, we were able to have surgery. Tyler was the 2nd baby to ever have this type of surgery done! They put a shunt in his brain to drain the excess fluid off of his brain. Again, long story short....
A miracle happened that day. In the days to come, the surgery had worked. The fluid levels were starting to come down. Things were looking good. Until.. I had a clot in my placenta and was in labor. Tyler was born at 27wks gest. He weighed 2lbs 0oz. He was in the NICU for 5 1/2 months. After 13 surgeries, he finally got to come home. Today Tyler is 7 1/2. He is considered medically fragile. He has lung disease, Addison's Disease (adrenal disorder), seizures, mild CP and hydrocephalus. Tyler has had 29 surgeries ( I could list them all, but we would be here all night) Tyler is truly a miracle. I wouldn't trade him for anything. I guess you could say that I am the only person that you will meet that has had 2 c-sections within a week of each other.... yes that was fun. But at least it has made me a really strong woman!
After all of that said.... My DH and I started to think about having another baby. 2 years ago both of my bestfriends were pg and the same time. It was very hard for me. I long for a baby soooo bad. So we figured we were both on the same tune. In the past either I was ready and he wasn't or just the oposite. We are finally on the same tune and we have had 0 success.
We have been trying for 1 1/2 years. I was recently dx with PCOS. I had the battery of blood work and u/s. My new GYN told me that I have the "curse of the black pearls." He is so funny....
He put me on Metformin 2000mg/day. My insulin test showed that my fasting insulin level was 24. Which isn't horrible, but at least he could put me on something to help.
My DH and I have been on the South Beach Diet since Jan and I have lost 32lbs. I have kind of hit a wall with it though. I just can't seem to loose anymore.
My dr also put me on Prometirum-200mg X10 days. I got my AF on Tuesday. I was so excited until Wednesday. I started hurting so bad I almost was in tears. I have never hurt that bad. By Thurs I was flooding so bad that from Wed to Thurs I used a WHOLE box of tampons! I went back to the doctor on Friday to make sure that my hemoglobin and bp were ok. Thank GOD they were.
I was supposed to start my first round of Femara 2.5mg days 5-9, but because of all of the blood we figured it wasn't a good idea!
Hopefully next month I will have an AF and won't have to take Prometrium and I can start Femara. I am so excited. I just have to keep knowing that this is part of GOD's plan!
I hope you haven't gotten too bored reading this! Have a great week!

Is there a good time to take the Clomid to reduce the likeliness of symptoms? Should I take it with food?

Well to be honest Michelle they're really not reliable enough to count on. I had just started TTC again after a much needed break for DH and I. But in May my cycle was 37 Days (3 days of AF) and this month is to be continued (5 days of AF), and the last time before May was September of '07. So you see, I can never really tell...which makes it so hard for me to rely on OPK's and FF altogether.
I was even going to buy the CBEFM but I heard that with PCOS it does not record your ovulation correctly. I'm not sure exactly where I've read it but it was on more than one website. I also cannot tell with my cervical mucous because some days it will be EWCM and then sticky the next...which does not make sense, and most of the time it's an abundance (sorry for the TMI) of EWCM and it lasts throughout the entire month.
I'm just weird and so is my body, I only hope that one day I will be able to make sense of it. So here's to hoping!
***And if you (Michelle) or anyone else has any suggestions please, please, please voice them to me! I am pretty much desperate and open for trying anything!!!***

Ya sometimes OPKs are not always reliable esp if your cycles are crazy! I think that it is just a matter of getting you on the right medication cocktail to get your cycles regulated.
Mine are becoming more regulated the longer I am on meds. Glucaphage has seemed to help with. I have also taken Clomid for 3 mos and the last 2 cycles I have taken femara...which has regulated them even more!

XEVY-
AF is supposed to be some time around July 14. (Give or take a few days) CD1 was on June 17.(I've really got to spend some time and get me a ticker!) I am 1000mg of Metformin. I am working my way up to 2000mg. Since I haven't had any problems, I am going ahead a couple of days early and increasing to 1500mg today. I have already lost 3lbs! Even though I have been on the South Beach Diet since Jan, my weight loss kind of stopped last month. It feels good to get it going again!
I just hope my AF comes naturally and I don't have to go back on Prometrium again! That stuff didn't do well with me. I would be sitting on the couch about 45 minutes after I took it and this crazy feeling would just wash over me. One night it was only 20 minutes after I took it. I was so drunk, I had to get my husband to help me off of the couch and get into bed. He was laughing so hard! But if I have to go back on it, then I just have to suck it up and do it. It will all be worth it in the end!
I am so excited to have joined the group! It is nice to be able to talk to the same folks that are going through what I am and be able to relate. It's something that not even my bestfriend can identify with!
Good luck ladies!
Kelly :)

Yeah, I hope that with me taking the Femara, it will help regulate something! But on a serious note, my AF did seem a little more like my 7 days of heavy AF. I only lasted 5 days this time but last month I only lasted 3. So I do see that my AF is starting to somewhat regulate itself, even if it is ever so slightly.
Well, I guess that my and DH will BD until the end of the month and see what happens. It will be the TWW for me!!! I will keep you posted on everything!
Thanks!

Hi everyone! I'm new to the group, but have been reading for a little while now. It's been great to read everyone's stories and know I'm not alone. I just found out on Friday that we're finally pregnant again (yeah!), but the journey has been anything but simple, which is why I wanted to share my story.
I have a DD from a previous marriage (she's 8), but I had to go through 3 rounds of Clomid to get pg with her. Then, last year, after about a year of trying on our own, my new husband and I went back to Clomid. Ironically, the 3rd round of Clomid worked again for us, only I didn't know it. After having AF, then having random spotting and some pain, I found out 9 weeks later I was indeed pg but it was ecptopic. Because of how far along I was, I had to have it surgically removed, along with my tube. Needless to say that was the worst thing I ever went through. So after several more Clomid tries with no success, we went to an RE.
Within 15 minutes of my first visit, he diagnosed me with PCOS (atypical) and Endometriosis (and I only had one tube). Then, my DH's 1st S/A count came back low, so that added more fun for us. DH's 2nd count came back good, so we got the ok to try IUI. After a slew of tests for me, including a hysterscopy to remove polyps from my uterus, we had our first IUI. As with PCOS, I had lots of follicles, however, all but one would eventually be mature enough for the procedure. This was disappointing in itself, but coupled with DH's low count on insemenation day, I just knew it could never work...or so I thought.
Like I said previously, we just found out on Friday we're pg. I am still in shock and didn't really believe it until my second hcg test today. I truly believe that if something is meant to be, it will be. Somehow, against all odds, we were able to get pg the first time. I wanted to tell my story, not to gloat that I'm pg, but to show you all that it can and will happen for you all...it just takes time. Stay positive and baby dust to all!

XEVY-
AF is supposed to be some time around July 14.
Kelly :)
Good luck this cycle Kelly! And Welcome!

Nope, not just yet. But I will let you know what happens. I am especially ecited this month because I think that with the Femara I might have actually ovulated!!! I never knew what ovulation felt like until I asked a couple of friends and my sister and by the description they gave and what I felt matched perfectly. I actually felt a slight twinge followed by a dull ache on my right side last Wednesday and felt an even harder cramp-like pinch later on the afternoon on my left side.
So I guess in all reality, I think that I might have ovulated from both ovaries that day or at least I hope I did! I am so excited!
But like I said before...I will keep you posted on EVERYTHING.
Thanks for being such a great listener and follow-up TTC'er you awesome lil possum!

I agree. This gives me so much hope and makes me anxious to be big and PG! I really do want it more than anything on God's green earth and I know everyone else on here does too.
So having said that I hope and pray that God will grant us the gift of a beautiful, healthy baby soon (hopefully this year) and helps those of us who are feeling down about not having gotten PG yet. I put my total faith and trust in God and I am not ashamed to admit that to anyone because He will hear our prayers and will have mercy on us and grant us our requests. All "we" have to do is claim it.
Blessed Be!

Hi Everyone,
Ok, let me just start by saying that I am not a patient person, and this whole stc journey has been weighing on me. I wonder if the Clomid is affecting my mood?
I have had some pain the last few days, I guess this means the ovaries are working? :chinscratch:
It has been over a week and I still do not know the results of my fasting insulin test. I am going to call the office, again, tomorrow. My Dr was out of the office Thursday and Friday of last week, but I thought by now I should know my results. :crossed:
DH is sick :sniffle:. Figures, this is our week to :bding: I hope he doesn't get me sick too :fingerscrossed: I don't want anything to interfere with a BFP.
I hope all of you are well. :babydust: and :stickyvibes:
Andrea,
Good luck on your :2ww: I hope it flies!
Michelle,
How was the wedding?
Well...I am the not the most patient person either! LOL! Clomid made me super moody....and I am a moody person to begin with...no thanks to PCOS! It does sound like you might be getting ready to O! Did they do an HA1C for your blood sugars. That would be more of an accurate test of how well your sugars have been controlled.
Uh-oh...what is he sick with? Hope he does not have a fever! Good luck with BD and getting your BFP:)
The wedding went well! It got really cold and windy that day. It was strange! Good thing the ceremony was short and sweet! I will post some pics as soon as we get them!

Michelle,
Glad to hear the wedding went well
I think DH has a cold, I don't know if he has a fever; he is sleeping right now. He works nights and he had a few hearings today, so I don't expect to see him for a few more hours. I doubt he will let me take his temp. If he has a fever, should we avoid :bding: Will a fever affect his count, mobility or quality?
As for the fasting test, I am not sure what test they did. They only took a vile of blood on 6/23. Hopefully I will find our tomorrow.
Take Care,
Maria
I have read that temps can affect sperm. But not sure how. When you call to get your results you could ask your doc then about that.
Is your DH a copper? Mine is...just assuming since you said he works nights and had hearings today!
BTW....what kind of dogs do you have?

Yes, he's a cop. To tell you the truth I never thought I would marry a law enforcement officer, but here we are, together for 7 years, married for almost 4. He said early on that he would wear me down, and he did. They are persistent aren't they? :P
We have two Boxers, a brother and sister from the same litter. In fact, my parents have two of their siblings (another male and female). There were 8 puppies and we bought half the litter. I would not know what to do without them!
How about you?
Maria
LOL! Sounds like us! We have been married for over 5 years and together for almost 8! There sure are a lot of us gals on here that are married to cops! LOL! I would not want it any other way!
We have a almost 5 year old Bullmastiff. She is the best! They have the greatest lil personalities! In fact she cracks me up with her doc biscuits. If the weather does not permit her to bury her dog biscuits outside she buries them in corners or under the pillows on the couch. Now last night I am getting ready for bed and notice some crumbs under my pillow...I am like WTF...so I lift up my pillow to find a half eaten dog biscuit! I LMAO when I saw that! She is like a fury kid!
Well...better run...gotta get ready for work!

Andrea,
Hi there :hi:
If you want to include the smiley pics choose the advanced reply instead of the quick reply. It will give you the smilies block with the option for more choices. Select more and scroll through them until you find the one you want, then click on it. It won't appear in the message as you type, but the name will be there. Also, you may need to increase the viewing box size, or at least I did.
I hope this helps!

Maria - My RE told us that what your DH did 2-3 months ago is what affects his sperm counts, motility, and morphology. We were shocked at this, since I thought it was "refreshed" every few days! And yes, if he's sick, it will affect his stuff (3 months from now). Apparently, it's not the medications he might take, but it's the fact that his body is busy fighting off the illness and not producing sperm. Guess the reproductive parts of us are the last on the checklist of things to do when we're sick. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the well wishes and welcome! And yes, my 2nd hcg came back more than tripled, so I was very relieved! Now, once I have the u/s next monday I will feel really good about everything. I won't be able to see much, but I will at least be able to see that the little poppyseed (size it is now) is in the right place. The thought of having another empty uterus is a scary thought, so alot rides on monday's u/s. Wish me luck!
I saw that you'll be doing your "6th medicated cycle" in July. What procedure are you doing or what are taking, if I might ask?

Hurray! :stickyvibes::stickyvibes: to you and your lil bean! Best of luck on Monday! KUP on your U/S and we wanna see pics! :hooray:
Okay...so long story short...was on 50mg Clomid for 3 cycles with OB. Started seeing RE in middle of 3rd cycle. That is when I was Dx with atypical PCOS. Started 2.5 mg femara and glucaphage in May. Also had and HSG in May. Which came back normal....my right tube did not want to flush at first, but it finally did! No BFP in May or June, so increased dose to 5mg femara. I have initial U/S to make sure no overstim and check uterine lining then before O I go in for another U/S to check same thing and make sure lining and follies grew! We have deteremined that I am Oing on the meds. We increased the dose (w/ caution- I have hypertension and RE concerend about multiple pg with me) this cycle since it will increase our chances of conception. DH SA is normal too! On my first cycle of femara I did a trigger shot as well. Last cycle I O'd on CD13 (early for me....since on meds I would O on CD15 or 16...so that is good I am Oing earlier) so we did not need to do a trigger. I have had tons of lab work done....around $3,000 worth (which what the insurance did not cover my work covered it....it was considered a discount)! So anyway...we are always in the 2ww for something...2ww for O or 2ww for BFP or AF! EEekk :)
Mmm...I think that about covers it!
What about you? What tests did you have done?

Hi everyone,
I finally received my fasting insulin results today and the number was good. The normal range is 70-90 and I came in at 85 :celebrate: I guess this means I am just going to have to work harder on my weight because there is no excuse for the increase. Now, which program to choose?
Today was day 4 of OPK testing and no surge yet. Probably good since DH is still feeling under the weather. He has a miserable summer cold, no fever though.
Question: I have heard conflicting information on the best time to use an OPK, first morning urine or not?
I hope everyone is making fun plans for the 4th!

Maria,
Hello! Great news! As far as diets? Well, I have heard that the South Beach is a good one to loose wt. One of the gals on here....we may have talked about this once before....lol....lost wt on that diet. She does however have insulin resistant PCOS....but it might not hurt to try it!
My RE told me to use the OPKs in the afternoon. Make sure that no matter when you take them (it really does not matter) that your urine is not diluted from drinking tons of fluid and that you take them around the same time of day.
Good luck and hope your DH gets to feeling better to make some babies!

I love Deliver Me. I just happened to have caught it on a marathon showing a couple of months ago. So now I watch the reruns. It's a really good show!
My DH and I watch Jon & Kate +8 all the time. They crack me up. My Dh gets cracked up when Jon lashes back at Kate. I thought I had some OCD issues, but nothing compared to her. I can't believe that she gets on her hands and knees and mops the kitchen floor 3 times per day. Have you seen the one when Jon gets hair implants? It is too funny!

The 4th itself was good, but I got food poisoning at a party on the 5th and spent the entire 6th, well, hugging the porcelain god or sleeping. I ran out of OPK's and still didn't feel quite up to going to the store for more, so I don't know if I O'd. I sure hope DH and I :bding: enough through Saturday. I am so freakin depressed. Thanks ladies!
Physically I feel much better, it is the mental drain that has me today. I know I shouldn't feel this way, but I am so afraid that we lost another month. This has to be the Clomid - I've been down before, but this is ridiculous! DH is quite confused/annoyed with my behavior, he doesn't handle emotional swings well. In fact, I think I guilted him into BDing when he got home from work this morning; a last ditch effort I suppose. Sorry, I guess I am just having a pity party for myself.

Hi ladies! Incase you didnt read my "i'm new" post... I was Dx w/ PCOS Aug 07
Since then, I have done 5 rounds of clomid, 2 iuis with HCG inject, and now, I am STC with 2000mg of Met,Fertility blend, Muti vutamins, the Ov watch and I actually had some sort of kinesiology thing done at a holistic doc last month right before my Af was due. It was sort of like reflexology and I thought- why the heck not right? lol
I am on cd 30 and my cycles are pretty normal for someone with Polycystic ovaries- between 26-29 days. I did not ovulate until cd17 so I think that is why I may be late... not what I am hoping but... we shall see.
I have read 6 different books based on PCOS and when I got them, I was so excited to read about this syndrome that I sat and read all of them in 3 days cover to cover--- wow talk about super depression setting in. I don't think I have ever been so sad in my entire life. I just hate the fact that this will NEVER go away! All we can do is manage it. Not fair at all. Not everyone has to worry about refined carbs like we do. Not everyone has to worry about eating french fries because it make them have doo doo issues afterward. Sigh... well you all probably get the idea. I will get off of my soap box now.
I am praying that all of you women that have PCOS find the easiest way to manage your pcos and for those that have been stc, get their BFP very soon!!!:hugs:
Maria- Glad you are feeling better! LOL....I know what you mean about the guilt BD...but its gotta be done or else the meds are pointless!
CopperTop- Welcome! Do you know how long your LP is? Have you heard of Femara? I would ask your RE about it...much betta for us PCOSers! Good luck!

How are you doing?

Well I am in the 1WW! It's a win/win for me. If AF doesn't show by the 14th, I have to POAS. If BFN I have to wait until the 21st and check again. If still BFN, I have to call and get Prometrium and then start my Femara. So either way I am stoked!
I have no signs of AF so we will have to see! I am keeping my fingers crossed! I hope I can hold off until the 14th to POAS. I haven't bought any tests so I think I should be able too.
I do have another dilema though. My best friend in the whole wide world, m/c back a couple of weeks ago. It has been super hard on her, I couldn't imagine. She got a really jerk of a DH that asked her how long she was going to play the m/c card!!! Oh I hate him. He told her that he couldn't deal with her crying all the time. Oh yeah I know... how horrible. The pg wasn't planned and he doesn't want to TTC at all period. I don't know what she is going to do. What I am worried about is if I am pg, how the heck am I going to tell her? I know that she will be happy for me, but gosh I just don't want to put her through that. So when I do get pg, it might be awhile before I can tell her. I hate that b/c she is more like a sis to me than anyone.
Other than that... today has been awful! I don't want to go through it again, click over to the regular TTC and read the "need prayer..urgent" thread. A good friend of mine's daughter is very sick. You can read all about it there.
I guess the one thing that made my day was coming home and being with Tyler. He is such a hoot! They are doing road construction near our house. He stands up all day and watches everything that is going on. And he said a new word today...PURPLE. It sounded more like PURCLE it was too funny.
I didn't mean to make this so long! I like to write books!

Maria,
LOL! Follies were huge on both sides and had a good lining too (trilaminar lining and 8.5) Woo-hoo! I did a trigger yesterday too!
How are things going with you?
Michelle,
That is great! I really hope you are well on your way to a :bfp:!
Things are fine. I had some pain on the right side again today and I am curious why. Shouldn't the ovary activity have stopped by now?

Hi Kelly,
Tons of :babydust: and :stickyvibes: to you during your wait!
I am sorry about your friend's m/c. There is no loss in the world that I can compare it to. As for her DH, some guys just don't get it because they don't see the changes that we women feel during pregnancy. Let's face it, guys are visual, so if they can't see it, it probably doesn't exist or if it does, it is certainly being blown out of proportion. My DH and I had some issues too. Frankly, I had to tell him sorry I can't grieve on your time table and he left me alone after that. Each person is different. As for announcing good news, unless you plan to wait in the event of early complications, I would just tell her. I think the sooner the better. She may take it worse if she thinks you were trying to hide it from her. If you are truly as close as you say, she will be happy for you, regardless of her own personal grief.
Sorry about the long post!
Maria

Thanks Maria... I guess I have gone through it in my head so much, of what to say to her that I've gotten confused! I am sure she will be ok with everything. I kind of was on the other foot a couple of years ago when she and another close friend of mine were pg at the same time. They were only 6wks apart. I was able to come to terms with it and I am sure she will be able to.
My friend has the worst MIL in history!!! She actually was telling her son that his wife was faking being pg! I think that her MIL got to her and that's the reason why he was acting so bad about it. He never would even rub her stomach or anything. She was 13wks. He also told her that having another baby would be the biggest mistake of his life!! Boy did that make me mad. All I could think was that this jerk doesn't want his baby, but look at all of us that are STC. It's not like they are kids. He is almost 30 and she is 26. Can you say crazy?!
All we can do about it is pray!

Oh my! What a wicked woman! You're right, no wonder he behaves the way he does. However, that doesn't give him the right to be an insensitive jerk. Some guys never grow up, it doesn't matter how old they are. If I thought about all of the idiots out there that I come in contact with and their insensitivity to pregnancy, getting or staying pregnant, I'd lose my mind!
I am truly sorry for Kate and her family. I will add them to my prayers.

Okay ladies I need some help! I am so confused and have been searching the internet all night long on this subject. I know I should know better and just ask my friends here but I just could not resist the temptation. Well let me say this first...you all remember my stats right? Well if not then I will briefly explain them to you, I started AF 6/11-6/15 and we BD'd CD8, 14, 17 & 20 while FF said I was fertile on CD14-16 and "supposedly" ovulated on CD17-20? But that's not the confusing part. Trust me it gets better.
Today I would say about mid-day I was feeling a one-sided cramping or dull aching that ended up centering itself to the middle of my tummy and grew to be much more of a cramping. It was just between 5:30p to 9:30 that I have been feeling it harder, but still not violent. Let me put it this way, on a scale of 1-10 the pain was like a 6.5. Okay, so I had to use the restroom for #1 (sorry for TMI) and when I wiped I had seen that the toilet paper was smeared with CM and streaks of pinkish/reddish blood (it wasn't dark blood), very light but still there. And my heart sank.
At first my head started swimming with the horrible ideas that for sure now I am not pregnant and that there could be no way...that the fight is over for this month. But just as I had said before, I started searching the internet for something, ANYTHING I could find about this subject. And just as I had typed in the search field "can you bleed and still be pregnant", a whole page flashed up with so many topics about what I had just experienced. I came to find an interesting one where I said that the bleeding may sometimes be caused by "implantation bleeding" and that cramping may also be present. It also went on to say that it was about six days or so after ovulation and about a week before they were supposed to have AF.
So now my question to you wonderful ladies is, could it be possible for me to experiencing the same exact thing? Is there a slight chance that a baby could be implanting itself into my tummy right now? What should I do? Should I wait until next week when I am "scheduled" by FF to start AF or should I just go ahead and test tomorrow in the AM?
I was seriously thinking that it couldn't possibly be AF because I wasn't supposed to get her until next week for sure, but then again my AF's haven't exactly been behaving themselves lately...that is, without the Prometrium which induces my AF. So I guess that anyones response would be very much appreciated at this point. And everyone's opinion or thoughts would be very welcome. Thank you all for your support in this matter.
Andrea

Mmm...that is always a hard question. Well....how many DPO are you? Sorry...I will be honest...I am being a lil lazy and not figuring it out on my own! LOL! Did you test? I have heard that the CM and blood can be a normal part of your cycle.

Well girls I am trying not to go out and buy an HPT. It is about to kill me! I test on Monday, apart of me wants to POAS NOW!!! I am about to go into DTs over here!! I need help!!!
TGIF is all I have to say about that! I know I am sleeping in in the morning. Saturday is Daddy/Tyler day! My Dh takes Tyler to get his weekly lab work done and then he takes him to Wal-Mart as a reward for doing so good while he gets his blood drawn. All I can say about my T-man is that he is one tough cookie! He hates to have the b/w done, but he sure does love Wal-Mart! He has more fun just standing up in the bugy than anything.
Have a good weekend girls! Monday won't be here soon enough for me!

I don't have much gas in my car...and the town that I live in is a HUGE tourist attraction on the weekends, so there ain't no way a I am going to go get any gas or go to Wal-Mart on a Friday afternoon! SO I have NO choice but to go home w/o an HPT.
I hate these darn phantom sypmtoms. I swear my mind is playing tricks on me. I haven't had any sypmtoms at all (by this time of the month I have almost all of them)! Until I read the thread about being dizzy. I swear I had a dream last night and I stood up and was dizzy. Then when I went to lunch a little bit ago, as I was coming out from the car, I swear I was dizzy. Oh well, I hope it is just the Metformin talking! And now my gums are a little swollen. I was a little sick to my stomach just after lunch yesterday. I haven't had any cramping of any kind except around O time. Usually by this time...AF is coming and I hurt really bad. Maybe it's a good sign! Like I said in my previous posts...it's a win/win for me. That's what I have to keep telling myself.
I have been on the Metformin for just over a month and I have found what I can and can not eat. I guess it can make me a little sick to my stomach too. Darn the phantom!

Hey Michelle,
There was quite a bit of pain, maybe a 7 out of 10. I am sure I ovulated on the 7th though, that was unbearable! The ovaries are quiet now and I am plugging along into the 1ww. I think I will test on the 19th, that will be 12 dpo. I am not too optimistic, but we'll see.
How are things? Did I see you have a birthday coming up?

Hope you ladies don't mind me jumping in here. I've been a lurker (sometimes post) for a year now. I was dx'd in March 2007, after a miscarriage and two years of STC on our own. We've done 8 cycles of fertility treatments, all failed. 4 clomid at increasing doses, the last with a trigger and IUI. Then on to 3 cycles of Follistim and IUI's. Aside from the infertility, I spent all of last year in denial that I have PCOS. It wasn't until I reached my heaviest weight ever, and I heard that a close friend of mine with PCOS was able to conceive naturally after loosing 60 lbs, that I finally realized I needed to face the music and take action. So, I've been on a TTC break since March 2008. In April I started changin my eating habits, and excersing, and have been able to loose 30 lbs.
Now it's time to get back into the game! My husband and I are going to check out a new RE on Wednesday. My current RE is nice, but I feel like another number to her. She mistreated me last cycle....she got me confused with another patient. It's time to move on.
I'm glad you formed a thread. I hope we can all move over and start a PCOS mommas thread.

Hey ladies, I hope you don't mind me sharing my story...
So as soon as I started having periods I only had about 2 a year, I never thought anything about it though because my mother said she was irregular till she was 18. So around 17 I became sexually active and went on the pill which of course got my periods going. So when my DH and I got engaged in 2004 I decided to go off the pill.
Well I was off the pill for about 8 months and still no periods. I kept going to the doctor but they kept telling me it was normal to go awhile after going off the pill. Finally I switched OB's and after many blood tests and ultra-sounds I was diagnosed with PCOS, evidently I have a very severe case of it. So my doctor put me on Metformin, nothing. Then he put me on metformin and clomid and every month would up the dosage of clomid. When I finally got to the highest dose of clomid and nothing was happening he decided to refer me to a fertility clinic.
Anyway, right before we went through all the testing with the fertility clinic he called me and told me he wanted to try one more thing. So I went on the pill for a month to get my period and as soon as I got that I started the clomid (500 mg for 5 days ) then we started Gonal-F injections. I went in to the doctors everyday and we would do ultra-sounds every other day. By day 3 there was no growth so my OB said lets just do two more days and then stop. So day five we did another ultra-sound and to all our surprise there was the start of some growth!! So he told me to do three more days over the weekend and on Monday we would do another ultra-sound. So I gave myself the shots over the weekend and went in as told on Monday, when we did the US there were 3 developed follicles!!!!
So I took one more shot and went in the next day to get the trigger shot. After the trigger shot my doc said to go home and dtd all the next week. And about 10 days later I got my BFP!!!! I was so excited I called my doc right away and wanted to get in for a real test but of course they made me wait :( Well when I finally went in for my first pregnancy US my doctor was more than shocked to see 2 babies!! He was just trying to get me to ovulate, he didn't think I'd get prgnant on the first try. So to wrap up my very long story, I now have 2 beautiful babies that I adore. And even though my pregnancy didn't go the way I would have liked, I would do it all again for them!
Thanks for letting me share my story. I wish all you ladies lots of luck and fertility vibes and I'm sure I'll be back when I'm ready to do it all again!!
Stay strong :)

okay so I am new to this board, but not new to TTC. I have been with my husband for 9 years, married for 4 years, and TTC for 3 years. I was diagonsed with PCOS in Feb, so (5 months ago). Each day and each month that goes by it gets harder and harder to deal with the dissapointment. I am a 2nd grade teacher and have spent most of this summer being let down and full of heart break.
BTW: i have regular periods... i can tell you want day on the dot i will start, it has always been that way... so for me it makes it even harder for me to understand!!
what do you guys do to deal with the dissapointment??
:eyebrow: just really sad lately!
best wishes to everyone---

:shocker: Wow! Welcome to the group! Thanks for sharing your story.

okay so I am new to this board, but not new to TTC.
:eyebrow: just really sad lately!
best wishes to everyone---
:hugs: Welcome to the group. Everyone deals with the disappointment differently. I find just reading through the posts here at APA helps. There are so many women who have had horrible/lengthy experiences and have remained positive, so I try to model their strength and hope. Keeping hope and faith is truly important. Remember that when it does happen for you, you will love and cherish that child more than maybe the average mother because of the trials to become a mother. I am also a teacher and I know the desire to get pregnant during the summer is high, at least for me, so that I can take maternity time at the end of the school year and extend it into the summer. Hang in there and keep trying, and don't forget about your DH. He is going through this with you, so draw on his strength.
BTW, how are they treating your PCOS?
Good luck,
Maria

Hello to all my regular PCOS pals!
Well, I POAS this morning and received what I expected, a :bfn: ARRGGHH! :headbang: Why did I have to O during the food poisoning weekend? No major signs of AF, just sore girls. I guess I am going to revisit CLOMOOD for round two.
I really hope that you all have better luck than this! Take Care!
Hey Michelle, I hope you get a :bfp: on your birthday! Happy Birthday a few days early

:hi: Michelle,
Thanks, I'll take all the well wishes I can get :silly: Overall, this has been an interesting month with the meds. The Clomid makes me emotional, sensitive and weepy. However, this cycle of 32 days was the shortest cycle in over a year and a half, which is good. I guess that is a realistic trade off. Hopefully DH can handle it :eyebrow:
On a completely different subject I received an email from a good friend of mine today and she is pregnant with baby #3. Some people have all the luck.

Maria,
Thank you! OMG I know what you mean about the CLOMOOD! STC is stressful and emotional enough! Then to add coo-coo meds ontop of it! Ah...it will be worth it in the end! Some months I am really bad and others I am fine. So strange!
Best wishes to you and this cycle! I hope this is it for you guys!

I almost feel guilty posting in STC since we haven't really started trying yet, (we're just NPP atm) but I was invited so I thought I might as well introduce myself. I was diagnosed with PCOS yesterday due to my history of irregular periods and recent weight gain. My mom claims that it runs in the family, as she was always very irregular as well. I don't believe she was ever diagnosed, though. Ok, I think I'm done rambling now. :eyeroll:

Hello all,
I guess I'll start with a history before my questions :winks: I have been on a long journey with fertility and am I only 29! I did not start my cycle until I was in 10th grade. It always was really heavy. When I was 17 AF would last for a 2 weeks go away for 2 and come back. I went to the DR and he told me that I had a cyst on my RT ovary. My ovary grew to the size of a grapefruit. It was removed a week after my 18th birthday. A year later...I had the cells on my cervix frozen after pre-cancer cells were found. So, from the ovary removal - Feb 2007, I took BC.
2006 sister diagnosed with PCOS. Talked to DR about this and he was not concerned because I am thin.
I went off BC in Feb. and had a cycle and then nothing. AF came in May, finally. I went to the DR for a follow-up about the time in between cycles and he said that because I have 1 ovary and had been on BC for so long that I needed to let my body have time to adjust. By September and only 1 cycle he wanted to do a DNC to see what if any problems were going on with the lining. He also did a Hyst. (Insert a camera into uterus). He found what he thought was a septum. So, I go into a panic and :boohoo:. After an MRI---that showed "unremarkable" or normal uterus but Poly cystic ovaries and an HSG that did not show a septum but showed a blocked left tune (the one with an ovary).....he was "perplexed" and sent me to an RE.
My RE immediately said PCOS. With the family history and irregular cycles from my start. Put me on Metformin and provera. Funny thing, I OVULATED on the provera...which is rare. Got AF, did a month of BC. Then first month on just Metformin...I ovulated!! But...BFN :ohno: My cycle was 39 days.
I can tell you I take Metformin XR--slow release. I take all 3 (1500mg) at one time after dinner per RE order. I never feel sick. In the AM I do have to use the bathroom but it is not too bad. I also take it with my prenatal which with the extra iron helps with the (sorry for the TMI) loose stool.
We are looking at redoing the HSG (it was a horrible day--experience). If my insurance will not pay for the RE to do the HSG, she will do a Lyp/Hyst to see about the septum and the tube. The RE thinks the septum is not there but I want to be sure. A septum divides the uterus into two horns--leaving little room for baby to grow and can lead to MC.
My questions-----
Did anyone on Met. have shorter cycles the more they took it? It is kind of hard to determine when to have :bding:. We just try to keep to an every other day routine. I really do not mind but sometimes we are just tired!
Anyone have tube issues as well and if so...how were they corrected? I am possibly blocked at the opening to the uterus.
Those thin cycsters..do you have to watch what you eat? Has your RE or DR told you anything about diet?
:ty: Megan
Welcome Megan! Sorry you have had so many troubles :( I am have a similar situation I was Dx with PCOS the first appt with my RE after telling 3 GYN's that is what I have. They all said no b/c I am thin.
I hope that they can get your tube cleaned out! I would just opt for the surgery then at least they can try to clean your tube and look at your uterus. The HSG for me was super painful...sounds like it was for you too and not just b/c the test physcially hurts:(
I am on my, well going on 4th cycle on metformin. My cycles are now like clockwork compared to before! My cycles were always b/t 23 and 32 days. Now they are anywhere from 26-28 days (it varies b/c I may O on or two days later which effects the length of your cycle).
That is great that you are O'ing with the metformin!!!! YEAH for the drugs!
Also, I do not technically watch what I eat, but I eat pretty healthy for the most part! I love my chocolate and ice cream! As long as you are eating a well balanced healthy diet and not McDonalds everyday you are okay! I have read some books about how certain foods can effect your fertility. But then I think....what about all those people who eat fast-food everyday and eat processed foods and just plain eat junky...they get pg.....then again....they do not have fertility issues either...go figure! I know I kinda look wide in my pic below...the size of the pic does me no justice but it is a cute pic of me and my DH! I am a lil less than 5'7" and my wt fluctuates b/t 134-139....depends on the time of the month....AF or O...LOL!
Anyway, KUP on what you and your RE decides! BTW....has your DH been tested?
Good luck and I hope your stay here is short and you can say hello in the expecting boards:)

Hello,
Yes, The HSG was painful and stressful. My DH has not been checked yet...we are waiting for my cycle to come so he can have the 3 days of no E for him. We are eating foods and taking vitamins for :happysperm: I am just so unsure of when I am ovulating :headbang:.
I have never been a bad eater of processed food or junk but…. I really don’t eat a lot of vegetables. I am getting better  I just switched to whole wheat for most things. I am trying to stay away from bad food but sometimes like when AF arrives you just NEED it! I have read books suggesting eating Low Glycemic index foods. This keeps insulin levels from spiking. Anyone else doing this?

Question for you: Atypical PCOS.....what finally gave you that diagnosis? I have a borderline high TOTAL testosterone (72) and at the RE last week, they noted that it was high (also have a potentially low egg reserve with an FSH of 10). With that, they said, well, this might mean PCOS but you definitely don't "look" like PCOS (in that I am thin, do not have hair issues- also normal-low bp, normal glucose, normal cholesterol).....and they left it at that! I am going on clomid with TVUS at day 12-14 and then hcg trigger with timed intercourse for "about 3-4 months" to see what happens. But my question is....what about this high testosterone? what about this "maybe PCOS".... what testosterone level would have caused more concern? what should the steps have been?
Realize that everyone is completely different but I guess I was just shocked that they dismissed it quickly without any further reasoning.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!

I have read that too about the GI. But I do not really follow any kind of special diet. As I metioned before I eat pretty healthy for the most part!
Good luck with the upcomig cycle and KUP!

Hello! Well, I suspected I had PCOS b/c of my high BP, family history and the fact that I could not get pg as well as skin issues (I started getting zits at age 25....shortly after stopping taking BCP-which is also used to treat PCOS...go figure). I asked 3 different GYN's about it and they all so no way b/c I am thin (infact my GYN thinks I am too thin...I am just under 5'7" and my wt flucuates b/t 134-138..so I am right where I need to be). My levels are pretty much normal, I am borderline normal with some of them (which can indicate PCOS).
My question for you is are they going to do the clomid challenge test since they suspect poor ovarian reserve? People who have POR do not respond to clomid. Which is another reason I knew that I could not have POR b/c I was responding to it. That Dx was devastating to me.
When did they drawn your labs (time of day) and what day of your cycle? And how old are you? As far as the testosterone levels, you can ask to be put on glucaphage to help regulate your hormones. If your insulin levels are too high you can produce too much testosterone which leads to infertility.
PCOS presents differently in all patients. Which is why it is often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed. The funny thing about PCOS too is that some months it can what you might call it "flare up" while other months your labs appear to be normal.
If you are not feeling comfortable about your diagnosis, esp if they told you "maybe you have this or well...mm we are not sure". I would get a second opinion.
You must advocate for yourself!! How long have you been seeing this RE?
BTW...has your DH been tested yet?
Let me know if you have any other questions I might be able to help you with.....perphaps some of the other gals might have some insight!
Good luck and KUP!

just needed some time to clear my head.
Here is my story. First I want to say I am sorry that we all have PCOS, but thankful that we have each other and can support one another.
I am Natalie 27 DH is 35. We have been married for almost 6 years and TTC for 2 years 3 months. I have never had regular AF so I was put on BC at 16 and took it for 9 years. After coming off of BC I noticed some crazy changes with my body. I never got my period....this really messed with me because somehow I thought I was pg every month. My face broke out-worse than when i was going through puberty.. I even got pimples on my back which was new for me. My face was EXTREMELY oily which was also very strange because at the time I was living in Colorado and had always had dry skin. I also felt like if I didn't eat every couple of hours I was going to pass out.
I went to my gyn and they did blood work and diagnosed me with PCOS. I am a twin and I don't know if this is true, but he told me it is more common in twins. My twin is a boy. They started me on Metformin, but I had terrible stomach issues and with the work I do (I assist surgical procedures) I couldn't have this. They switched me to clomid 50mg CD 5-9. The first month my temps were "textbook". The second not so good and the third was no good. At this point we had been ttc for a year. My doc put me on 100mg and then I moved to Arkansas. At this point I thought I wouldn't get pg especially since it was a stressful time with moving. In Aug. 07 I got a BFP. I was in complete shock...good shock. Now I had to find a new Gyn and go through my history. I went on to m/c end of Sept. It was a really hard time for me.
My doc said I would need to wait 2 cycles before ttc....well that took forever since I have never ovulated without clomid. So I had a really couple of cycles which they gave me progesterone so AF would come. Then I moved again to TX and went back to my gyn that I went to when growing up. He wanted to start me on Metformin again and gradually increase my dose. I now take 2000mg daily and tolerate it pretty well with some dietary changes. I have been taking clomid 50mg CD 4-8. This has been since January and still no BFP. I haven't been taking my temp, but I have been using OPK's. Last month I didn't have a surge so I guess I will need to go up on my clomid. I am taking a couple months off though because I won't be with DH due to his work schedule. I think this will be good for me emotionally and physically.
Sorry for my rambling, but I wanted to give my story and I appreciate any advice you have. :)
Natalie
Welcome! I too am sorry we have PCOS! And you are right it is great we have the support of one another! I am also sorry for you loss and that you are STC :( .
As for me, well I take fordamet it is a brand name of the metformin and it has little no to no GI effects. At least for me, which is why my RE wrote me a script for it (after giving me 6 wks worth of free samples). It is a little more expensive than the generic....but totally worth it! I would see if you can try that. Also, have you heard of femara? This is what several of us take instead of the clomid to help us O. It works great and you do not have the SE that you do with Clomid. Also I have ready that femara is better for us PCOSers!!
Has your DH been tested yet? And have you had an HSG?
And you are never rambling when you are on these forums! That is what we are here for to vent/cry/laugh/ramble/listen...etc.....see now I am rambling!!!

I have heard of Femara, but I am not sure what it is. I have never been to a RE, just an ob/gyn. They all act like they know what they are doing, but I am beginning to wonder. DH has been tested and everything is A okay. Everyone says that we got pg once and we will again, but it doesn't seem to be going so well.
What is an HSG..obviously I haven't had it since I don'tknow what it is :) I knew you all would give me some wonderful advice, thanks Michelle.
Also I will ask my doc about the fordamet and see if I can switch to that.
Thanks again!

Anytime! So....check this link out. It is from my RE's office. It is the release form for femara. http://www.fertilitycentercolorado.com/consent/letrozole.pdf ! I hope that helps!
 at your comment about OB/GYN's thinking they know everything about infertility..so true with some of them. Mine may have misdiagnosed me but at least she admitted she did not know a lot about infertility and that she may not be able to help me.
Glad that DH tested okay! I teased my DH about us wasting our time with the GYN if he was broke too so he went and got tested! Thankfully he is okay too!
An HSG is a hystersalpingogram. This is a diagnostic test done in radiology. They place a catheter in your cervix, inflate a balloon and inject dye into your uterus and tubes. The test is looking for blockages and abnormalities within your uterus and tubes. It is not a plesant experience.
Isn't it funny how people who have never gone through this have all kinds of advice about it? I know that most people mean well, but **** I sometimes what to tell them to shut their pie holes. Until you have experienced the devastation of infertility ....just listen to me please and stop giving me unwanted and ignorant advice! That is how I feel sometimes!
KUP!

Anyone with PCOS addicted to sugary foods, baked goods or feel irritable if they don't eat regularly?
I love sweets; chocolate and ice cream...and candy....though I have curved my bad habit and I am not as addicted to it.....though someome brought in baked cookies to work and well lets just say I ate a lot. I do get irritable if I do not eat regularly. Since I have been taking fordamet (metformin), it is not nearly as bad!

Yes! I have always loved candy and deserts. Also I feel sick and irritable if I don't eat regularly. I have cut way back on the sweets and carbs since taking metformin and I don't feel as sick as I used to. It has been hard giving up my sugar, but the side effects aren't worth it to me.

Hi ladies! I'm back in the game again. I have my follow up appt tomorrow, after 3 months of progesterone and ttcing with just OPks and BBT. Here's my story...My dr. suggested that I may have PCOS but never did any testing for it. She gave me a referral for an HSG and one for DH to get checked and a script for Progesterone. Well, I never got the HSG done b/c the dr only did them on Tues. and before CD7 and the way my cycles would start I could never get in. So, I'll be asking for a different referral DR.
I'm so ready to get things moving. I'm going in there with demands and not questions, so tired of this wait and see act. I've done my research and very convinced that I do have PCOS w/ ovarian cyst. We know that I'm not insulin resistant, she did check that (I just remembered). I have the weight issue and have been actively trying to lose it for months and nothing! I have gained close to 45LBS in 2.5 years! I have always struggled with my weight and the only time I didn't is when I was on BCPs. I learned recently that my aunts both have had ovarian cyst and one aunt had to have a cyst removed. My last 2 cycles were very painful and (TMI) my AF flow was more watery than thick like normal. Made me think from my research that I had a cyst rupture.
In addition to this struggle, I also have HS. A disorder that can be cause by hormone imbalance and has been found in women with PCOS. HS are like fistuals, they are under the skin like boils that are painful and may leak depending on the serverity. I've had this for as long as I can remember and they flare up around AF, due to the hormonal change. There is no cure for HS and it's suggested that healthly weight will decrease the flare ups. It all comes back to losing the weight and that's a HUGE STRUGGLE by itself!!! So, I'm going to request a u/s to check for the cyst.
What type of blood work should be done to diagnose PCOS? Suggestion if I should try to get medication and what type? Any info would be appreciated. TIA!! Baby dust to all!
Hello and welcome!
Well, it sounds like you are off to a good start.
Make sure they check all your girly hormones (LH, estrogen, progesterone), then check your testostererone levels. Have you had your HA1C tested (marker for long term blood sugar control).
A lot of us ladies, like myself (I too am not insulin resistant) take glucaphage (metformin). This medication is commonly used for diabetic patients but it can help regulate your hormones and can help make your cycles regular. Some of the ladies take Clomid or femara (femara is my drug of choice) for O induction.
Any other questions let us know!!
Good luck and KUP
Michelle:)

Well, the dr appt went ok. I am having my HSG done on Thursday, an u/s during my next AF and if everything comes back normal we will be doing glucaphage & colmid next. I'm having my blood test done for the hormone checks probably Friday morning. So I guess I got what I was hoping for and things are moving along. I'm a little nervous about the HSG, but I think that's just anticipation. Thanks for the advice!
Good luck! And take 800 mg of Ibuprofen before your appt....about 45mins-an hr before!

Okay, so on wed. aug 13 will mark our three years of TTC. I was diagonosed with PCOS back in March. I got put on metformin and my obgyn wanted me to take the meds for several months and then get checked out again. My husband wants me to call and get in again and get going on making this happen!!!( I am more than ready as well) What should I do? Call and get in, should I ask to get put on Clomid? or what is the next step.... this has been such a long wait. Will the DR just do that upon my request or what is the protocal with clomid or whatever the next step be? I want to be firm when I go in there, this wait is very hard, and I need to be informed when I go in there!
thanks

I would talk to your doctor. I am surprised that they haven't already tried clomid. You also might want to consider seeing a RE or fertility specialist. My doc told me that taking clomid and metformin increases your chance of getting pg because they can work together to help with ovulation. I would just be honest with your doctor and tell them what you want. You are the one paying for a service and they should listen to you and do what you want (within reason).
How long have you been taking metformin-since March? What is your dose of metformin? Did they have you gradually increase your dose?Have you used OPK's to see if you ovulate or have you temped?
Steph
Welcome!!! :) Well are you seeing an RE? If not I would meake an appt to see one! That would be the frist step! Also, has your DH been tested?
Good luck!!

dh has a low count and low mobility (but not toooooo low on either, so they said)
my ob/gyn is a fertility specialist too so that works out okay
my metformin i began in april, i started with 500 fist week, then 1000 second week and 1500 from third week on....
I went ahead and called the dr this afternoon, and here is my plan with them... they want me on my metformin for min of 6 months before they put me on clomid to see if metformin does enough to get us preg on its own.
I am a teacher so i went ahead and made my next apt, incase i dont get preg. i will be going back on my fall break in oct (seems like FOREVER away) and thats when i will get put on clomid if i am not preg... so we will continue to try and hope it happens on its own but otherwise that is the plan....
*okay personal question for who ever is comfortable answering... my insurance is covering NOTHING that is related to infertility (sucks i know) now i was curious as to those who also have insurance not covering things what costs are involoved with colmid and beyond... i just need to start a finincial plan with this whole thing, i have heard it can get expensive and i want to be prepared!!!
thanks

Steph-
I take 2000mg of metformin...don't know if you can do this, but it seems to have helped me. I also take clomid though..when I know DH is going to be around at the "right time" ;)
My insurance doesn't cover any thing to do with infertility either, but fortunately their is a generic for clomid (clomiphene citrate) and for 100mg (and they usually start you out at 50mg) I think it is about $40. If I were you I would call around and check with different pharmacies to see what your out of pocket expenses would be so you can find the cheapest. I would try Wal-mart, Costco, CVS etc. I personally go to Walgreen's, but I have not checked the price this is only for convenience since we travel a lot!
I have to go to see my doctor every month to get checked and make sure I don't have any cysts, but however they code it insurance has paid so far!
Sorry for the long explanation, but I hope some of it is helpful. This is as far as I have gotten on my journey and dealing with the insurance. Good luck and let me know how things are going!

Thanks for all of the information everyone is willing to share.
best wishes for everyone!
it is so hard to be having all of these troubles and to look at others who recieve the blessing so easily!! :P
I do not remember what the clomid cost me. Sorry!! I have decent insurance but it does not cover everything...such as IUI...we had to fork out $500 for that the other day. But we are willing to do what it takes to get pg!
ITA with Natalie, esp since you guys are in the same boat as far as insurance goes!

I figured Wal-mart would be cheap. I just use Walgreen's because I travel a lot and it's easier. Also my insurance covers Metformin. I take 2000mg a day and I get 3 months worth for $5.00. I guess they think I have diabetes or something. I don't know how my doctor codes it for the insurance. Good Luck!

Hi everyone, I'm new to this so I guess I'll start off with some history and what brought me here, lol... Was dx w/PCOS Feb. 2008, have been TTC since Dec.07. I've had an ectopic pregnancy (2006), resulting in one fallopian tube blocked, was on BC to regulate AF until we decided to TTC. I started Metformin (1500) in March, after my ob/gyn dx me w/PCOS, but it was making me horribly sick to my stomach, so I stopped taking it, then tried again in May. The second try wasn't as bad and I have been taking the metformin now since the beginning of June (1500). After 2 months of no AF, and not ovulating, Dr. gave me provera, and so I did have AF but have still not ovulated. I go to the doctor at the end of this month which will probably result in an hsg and s/a for DH and then to start clomid as he said this would be the next step. I hope this wasn't tmi, lol.
I think it's great that we can all talk and share our experiences, as I don't personally know anyone else (friend in area, etc.) who is going through this. I have already found some helpful information-- for example, I wish I would have known a long time ago that some simple diet modifications could lessen the stomach upset when taking the metformin! After reading about that (don't remember who mentioned it), but I cut some carbs out of my diet, as sweets/breads, etc. are my huge downfall, and have felt so much better w/hardly any stomach issues...! I'm also trying to lose weight to hopefully improve my health in general and get me back on track a little bit. (that's the hard part!)
So do most people take metformin and clomid together, if there are no results w/the metf. alone? Like I said, I think this may be the next step but then again I don't know what to expect... Kinda nervous about the hsg also and DH is apprehensive about the SA, but i'm just ready to move ahead w/whatever it takes... Well, thanks in advance for the help and for listening!
*~A~*
Clomid is $9 for 5 tablets at Wal-Mart, Kroger and most supermarkets are now matching those prices if you ask! It is totally legit to call around for prices as well....in fact, my RE does it once a month to ensure they are sending everyone to the right place (i.e. my clomid is from Kroger at $9 but my Ovidrel is 42$ from a hospital outpatient pharmacy...vs. $90 at other pharmacies!).

Welcome! You are in the right place. There are a lot of us here that can relate and I have found this to be a great place for me!
I don't know why our docs don't tell us about the diet with Metformin, but it does make a big difference. Also, I take 2000mg of Metformin, I don't know if you can do this. My doc said that taking clomid and metformin together will increase your chances of ovualtion.
Tell your dh not to worry about the SA-its no big deal- I figure compared to all that we go through that is the least they can do ;) My dh said it was nothing. I would definitely have that done, because a lot of the time male infertility is to blame, but there are things that can be done a bit easier than women. Anyways hope some of this helps! Just wanted to say hi and I hope your stay here is short!

Kinda nervous about the hsg also *~A~*
Welcome ~ I just wanted to let you know the HSG is not that bad. I had just a little AF cramping sensations during and a little after the procedure. Just take 800mg of Mortrin before hand and you'll be just fine. Good luck!!!
Welcome! Glad you found us! ITA with the girls above, get the S/A done! Also, for me the HSG did hurt (all women are different) and I have a high pain tolerence. But I was not told to take 800mg of Ibuprofen. So, that probably did not help. Anyway, the cramping I had during the procedure subsided about as quickly as it started. So it was not all that bad, but it was still not fun! Some AF cramps afterwards. They should provide you with a panty liner (if not take one). You may spot afterwards blood &/or the dye.
Some women take glucaphage (metformin) alone or in combo with other ovulatory meds and like you even with progesterone. My cousin took just the met and progesterone and got pg with both her kids on that combo. Me, I did not need progesterone but I have taken clomid alone. And since May I have been on the femara and met combo (and yes I am ovulating well and my lining looks good...everything has just not met up yet)!
Docs just assume sometimes. That is why sites like this can be a great resource...so you can go into your doc's office and ask questions! I am probably really an annoying patient b/c I am always asking questions (good thing my RE will sometimes just offer me the info or show me stuff that is not really related to my U/S on the screen)!
Well, good luck! KUP!
Michelle:)

Thanks, I will definitely take something before the hsg then. Also might ask my doc about the 2000 of metformin. No kidding, the dh's don't have to go through near as much as we do so it should be a breeze for them, lol. Just awaiting my appt at the end of the month now...
Also, just wondering if you guys have read 'taking charge of your fertility' and if its any good, worth the time. I have just started "The conception chronicles" and I think it's pretty good, it just talks about women who were TTC, what they went through, and you can relate to it, also humorous.

Michelle,
Thanks for the advice for the hsg... What is femara? So did the clomid not work for you? I feel I will definitely need something to go w/the metformin, as i said, i'm pretty sure I have not ovulated w/the metformin alone in the past couple of months. I agree, I like to have an idea of different options and other things out there, b/c i'm like you, I ask a lot of questions! My doc is really good about it though, and encourages any questions, so I keep a running list for when i go! lol

Sure! No it worked but since I had visual problems my RE wanted me off of it. I was taking it with my OB. Femara is another...better...drug used to induce O! It does not have the crummy side effects that clomid does!
My cousin recommended that book to me. Um...it has been somewhat useful. I have not read the Conception Chronicles. I have read A Few Good Eggs though...nice read!
Glad to hear you are a question asker too!
Take care!

ITA with everyone on the way Metformin makes you feel but with controling my food, it has helped. Dr. put me on progesterone to try and get AF to come and it is 8 days since my last pill and still no AF. I did a Preg. test prior to taking the progesterone and it was neg. I am not sure why I have not started AF. DH and I are so ready for our dream. DH tested great. I just wish we could figure out the right mixture!! Does anyone have any advice for me? So I believe it started off when I was younger and decided to start the DEPO. I was on it for 3 years and decided to get off and do the patch instead.
I had forgot my patch a couple times and wasn't getting my period. At first I thought I was preg...nope. I went without one for about a year mentioning it to doctors who never said anything so I figured it wasn't a big deal.
I finally got a doctor that wanted to help me figure out what was going on instead of disgising it with more birth control. After quite a few tests he diagnosed me with PCOS. That was 3 years ago.
I have been on metform...made me very sick. So I won't take that anymore. I finally got a referal to a good doctor to help me out.
Right now I am currently on Provera and Clomid. I just started the first round (still on 50mg Clomid) and hoping for the best. And yes it has actually taken me 3 years to get to that point.
If anyone has any good baby making tips for PCOS...please share!!! :winks:

Sorry for the delayed response. Thank you Kristen, AF showed on Sunday. I am really hoping that this new combination works. I have heard people have good luck with Metformin and Clomid combo. We will see. I am telling you, Metformin is tough to take so it better work! :)
I know I saw an earlier post on insurance benefits. I work for the government and dh is a teacher and we hav no infertility coverage. I have learned to use my gyn until he can no longer assist us. The down side is that you really have to kind of moniter yourself. We spent a TON of money on the RE and decided to try the basic treatment with our gyn. I do think it is crazy how much all of these treatments cost. I think it is even more crazy how much adoption is, if we have to go that route.
Well thanks again for all your help and wish all you ladies the best of luck this month for your BFP"s!!!

Hi everyone
Not sure if I belong in this thread or not. PCOS is a VERY new term to me, so I just had some questions about it.
A little background on me. I was on Depo for many years, had my last shot in October '07. Been TTC since then. I have wacky irregular periods with no sign of ovulation, battling with my weight, hair growth on neck and a little on chin, and acne. My blood pressure is fine.
As others have mentioned, I was battling all these symptoms thinking they were either A) related to the Depo, or B) independently irritating issues. Then I read an article in a magazine that listed all these symptoms as related to PCOS and I was floored!
So my questions are:
- Does it sound probable that I have PCOS?
- Is weight gain caused by PCOS? or is PCOS caused by weight gain? And does PCOS make it harder to loose weight?
- Could all these symptoms be caused by Depo and not PCOS, even though I have been off the shot for this long?
- Is BC, specifically Depo known to cause, or be related to getting PCOS?
My husband just changed jobs, so our new insurance doesn't kick in for another 3 months. Otherwise I would run into a doctor's office for testing tomorrow!
Thanks so much!

Welcome! It certainly does sound like you could have PCOS. Of course the only way to know for sure is to have b/w drawn and an ultrasound. But to answer your other questions....
- Is weight gain caused by PCOS? or is PCOS caused by weight gain? And does PCOS make it harder to loose weight? Typically the PCOS is what causes the wt problems (especially if you are insulin resistant). PCOS does make it harder to lose the wt, but with proper diet and exercise along side with the medication glucaphage it can help you lose wt (but talk to some of the other gals who have struggled with their wt). Sometimes this alone can help control the PCOS symptoms. There is no cure for PCOS.
- Could all these symptoms be caused by Depo and not PCOS, even though I have been off the shot for this long? I know depo can cause problems with peoples wt. But I do not think that it can cause you to grow hair. When did you start getting acne? I never had problems with my skin until about 6 mos after I stopped taking BCP's.
- Is BC, specifically Depo known to cause, or be related to getting PCOS
Doctors do not really know what causes PCOS. They have proven that it can run in families (which is does run in mine). It is an endocrine disorder. Your body's hormones are basicially out of whack.
Do you know if you are ovulating or not? The irregular periods can be caused from coming of the depo, but I would imagine that should have passed by now since it has been a year since you have had a shot.
Most women with PCOS are anovulatory (they do not ovulate- O) or if they do O the follicles are not mature enough to be fertilized. Problems with insulin can cause women to produce more testosterone (where the acne and hair problems come from) which then in turn causes us to not O or not O well.
How long ago did your DH start his new job? His old job legally has to cover you with health insurance for 30 days (make sure you ck with his old insurance first or your docs office). So if you still have time get your hiney to the doc and have some blood drawn! They need to look at your girly horomes (FSH, LH, E2), testosterone levels, a fasting blood glucose, and an Ha1C (that is the test that is able to see how well your sugars have been controlled).
PM me if you have any other questions! I will do my best to answer them!
And good luck!

I was on the depo as well for a couple of years and when I got off it I never got AF. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 2 years later. I did get irregular hair growth, acne, and weight gain. I am also insulin resistant. Deffinatly go to your doc and tell them your symptoms. They would be able to make a better diagnosis and know for sure. Good luck!!

Thank you so much Michelle!
Yes, I am the same with acne. No problems with acne during teenage years, and then several months after ending BC, it got crazy! No matter how often I wash my face or what products I use.
I don't know if I am Oing or not. I haven't been temping. But I am always dry, no CM. Periods are sporadic and bleeding is medium flow for 2 days then stops completely. (I should fix my ticker, btw, its not even accurate) I've never had a positive OPK, but then I haven't been temping so its always been a shot in the dark when I do test.
DH thinks that I'm not being patient enough and that all the symptoms are from Depo. He basically insinuated that I am looking for something to be wrong because I want to conceive so badly and it hasn't happened yet. But after reading that article on PCOS it just really hit home how many of the symptoms I have, how much I matched everything it talked about. And I wasn't even trying to look up problems! The article just happened to be in a Real Simple magazine, of all places. Not even related to TTC. *sigh*
DH quit his old job on Aug 16, so if coverage is for 30 days then we are still covered. However, I think we had a $500 deductible, so we might have to pay everything out of pocket anyway. I need to see what kind of insurance his new job has and if it has better coverage.
In any case, its good to know I'm not just being paranoid, that this is something that could very well be happening. I would rather know what is going on, even if its bad, than be clueless. And I'm really glad I have a place like this with knowledgeable and supportive women to talk to!
