My girl was in daycare her first year....and YES, she always had a runny nose. Which led to several ear infections, which led to ear tubes. We were constantly sucking her nose out with the bulb suction and running a humidifier.

Yes, yes, yes, YES. Gavin's been in daycare since the beginning of September, and I think we are just now starting our 3rd cold. It feels like we don't really get a break; one cold flows seamlessly into the next. The runny/stuffed up nose never seems to go away. Still, none of his illnesses have been really bad, and he's just been congested and coughing. Look at the bright side: By the time our LOs start school, their immune systems will be ready and raring to take on the world, and they won't get sick as often as their classmates.

We are, too. Charlotte's ears have been going for the last 2.5 weeks now. She almost always has a little cough/runny nose. Even DH and I seem to get sick constantly... and we're only just getting into cold/flu season. It sucks.

Carter was sick all the time when he started daycare in June of this year. We pulled him out in September because we just couldn't keep going on with him continuously getting sick. He ended up having tubes put in a week ago. A cold here and there is one thing but to be going to the Pedi's office almost every two weeks was starting to take a toll on Carter and us.

My LO is not in daycare but also has a runny nose all the time. The doctor said it was most likely allergies (she has no fever, just lots of snot and boogers (sorry if tmi). He advised we give her allergy medicine and so when she gets a really runny nose I give her some Children's Zertec. It works wonders and she feels so much better.

Lucy was like that for the first year. It's not so bad now. She still gets a runny nose now and again, but it's not a constant thing like when she started.

Neither of my kids are in days care and both were runny for the better part of the first year and Megan is runny even now. I think for Megan it's teething related- something with all the extra droll? Anyway, as a friend told me, "some kids are just snotty." They have very cute noses, though. :-)

Lily's Pedi made the comment one time that if the child goes to daycare they will be sick a lot their 1st year, if they SAH they will miss most of kindergarten, it was all when they were exposed to the germs.

so glad others have issues with the runny nose! It is NONSTOP for my LO. He is never sick or has a fever or any other issues, just his nose is a constant stream....it is mostly clear, sometimes has a yellowish color, but no matter the color he is otherwise fine. I feel like I am constantly wiping his nose, and ALWAYs have a tissue in my pocket. People always comment about his runny nose and that irritates me sooooo much. (as if i don't know his nose is running! ugh) I guess it is normal and not much you can do (we found that allergy medicine doesn't help, either.

sorry i have no advice, but can certainly relate! good luck to you and hope it stops!

Yup, sick all the time the first year, mostly nothing major, colds and runny nose. Pulled out of daycare in June, SAHD this year, and no illness, no runny nose, nothing since June.

Full time daycare since 9 weeks old for Liam. His first cold hit about 2.5 weeks after his first day and it was nonstop till spring and warmer weather. It seemed like it was sick for 10 days, better for a week or two, then sick again. I think it was March he was sick for 3 weeks straight. Pedi looked him all over and decided he just got 2 different colds back to back. They said expect 8-10 colds the first year (if your LO is in daycare), and Liam had at least 10.

Take heart though, as I'm seeing a definite improvement the second year. He went almost 7 weeks between his first 2 colds this fall.

Of course there can also be runny nose from teething, but with L it's always paired with some serious drooling and fussiness (he's actually on the happy side when he has a cold, and only becomes a crankbutt when his teeth hurt him).

This makes sense to me. They've got to build up that immune system somehow.

Hi, don't usually post in here, but I'm happy to see that I'm not alone (not that I want our LO's to be sick, of course). I am exhausted by the constant illnesses due to daycare. October-May of last year were horrible, he's already had a good cold or 2 this year. Plus he has viral-induced asthma, so a cold can send us to the ER pretty quickly. It sucks!

We looked into pulling him from daycare or having someone watch him at home, but we just can't afford it.

Hugs to all of you!!

Do they do breathing treatments at the hospital?

Before he met me my DH made several trips to the ER for severe asthma attacks and would end up just getting a breathing treatment. Our first 6 months together I bought him a nebulizer machine off eBay and he got the solution from his doc. Much cheaper than an ER visit.

I don't know if that's an option for a LO or not, but maybe something to check into.

Thanks. Yeah, Jack is on Pulmicort 2x a day during the winter, and albuterol as needed. Right now he has viral-induced asthma. Hopefully in the spring we'll be able to start to wean him off the daily stuff.

We do the same thing. We live in the San Joaquin Valley (central CA), which is known for having the worst air quality and allergies and asthma are part of life for most everyone.
