Overview: Prenatal Tests

Email
Amniocentesis is a diagnostic test that may be recommended by your
health care provider following an abnormal triple test result.

Prenatal testing can give you and your doctor more information about you and your baby's health so that both of you can receive the best care possible. Sometimes prenatal tests will come back with abnormal results. An abnormal result can be caused by an incorrect test or by a problem with the pregnancy. Any abnormal results should be thoroughly discussed with your doctor. If your test results yield positive results for a birth defect, make sure that you obtain confirmation of the results and seek second opinions in order to rule out possible testing errors. If birth defects are detected, obtain as much information as possible about the defect along with possible treatment and outcomes. Many problems detected in pregnancy can be treated and overcome.
